Default My great experience with Top Speed in Atlanta GA.

Ok.. This is a long story, but read it and you will understand what Top Speed has gone through for me today.

I drove 7.5 hours to Top Speed last night (got a $212 speeding ticket) and didn't arrive until 2am GA time. We showed up at Top Speed at 10am and met with Trey (sp?), very nice guy. Doug shows up soon there after, looks over my car, asks about the mods and takes it for a drive to see how its doing on the base map he sent me.

About 10 minutes later he comes back with the car and pulls it on the dyno. On the first pull the car makes 341whp on his very conservative map but the dreaded boost creep appears and he lets off at 5500 RPM. He tries a few things for about an hour with it, but boost creep is still evident.

He asks me about the APS exhaust and tells me that he wants to cut out the divider in the downpipe because he knows that has helped other cars in the past. I say sure and one of the shop technicians immediatly pulls the car onto a lift. About 30 minutes later the downpipe was out and Doug hand delivered it to a local machine shop for them to cut the divider. He was gone for about an hour waiting on the piece.

When he came back the technician immediately started putting the car back together. 30 minutes later the car was back on the dyno. By this time its about 2pm. The car's boost creep wasn't as bad but certainly still evident. Doug tries playing with some maps for a little bit, and then starts moving vacuum lines around to ensure we are getting what we need. The vacuum lines being moved prove that the original lines were good.

At this point you can tell Doug is getting irritated with the car. I know that I'm about ready to take a hammer to it. Doug then calls Robert from Forced Performance. Robert tells him a bunch of things to test with the turbo. He spent about an hour testing things. Turns out the wastegate was opening at 19psi and should it should be opening at 15psi since its a 15lb actuator.

Now we think we are getting somewhere.. it might be a bad actuator. Doug drums up another actuator and puts it on the car, but again boost creep is still evident. Doug's feeling is that the problem is with the turbo. Robert had mentioned that maybe it didn't get ported correctly.

At this point we have exhausted all options and Doug's attitude is.. "there is no reason for this to be happening".

I decide to call and try and get a hold of Robert at Forced Performance to see if there was anything he could do for us considering how we were over 500 miles from home and basically all signs point to his product. I called 5 minutes before Forced Performance was closing and spoke with Robert. Robert was very helpful and agreed to send us a prototype exhaust housing they had been using for a couple months. Robert overnighted it to us and we will have it in the morning. Robert guarenteed this housing will not cause creep, but did agree that there was something wrong with the turbo that was sent to me.

Doug basically said that I was being charged for the technician time and the machine shop bill, but for the most part the car wasn't tuned yet. I'm sure he will ask for some money for today's events. He spent so much time with the car trying to get it right.

We had planned on heading back to Illinois tonight, but Doug agreed that tomorrow morning he would have a technician pull my turbo and swap exhaust housings so we could tune the car.

I just wanted to tell everyone that I think Doug and the crew at Top Speed have gone way above showing commitment to their customers and are willing to help them out when they are in a bind. The 7+ hour drive (when I could have gone to P&L in Chicago which is only a 4.5 hour drive) was well worth it knowing that my car was in good hands that the people who could make it happen are doing everything in their power to see it happen.

I am currently in a hotel again tonight and my car is at Top Speed. Hopefully tomorrow will yield better results. Doug even offered to come get my friends and I from the hotel tomorrow and bring us to the shop.

A big open thanks goes to Top Speed and Robert for standing behind his product and for both companies to come through when things don't go right.

glad you had a good experience, but i dont really see how boost creep is the turbos fault. wouldnt a EWG solve all your issues? Also, not all boost creep can be tuned out, and sometimes not even porting fixes it. Am i missing something? Plus arnet 20g's very prone to boost creep.

Either way i hope this works out well for you and good luck

Is the new ehxaust housing a 8cm hotside?

My experience over the last several days is exactly like your experience with a few exceptions. I even spoke with Robert @ FP and he told me the same things. He also told me that he could put a MBC on my car and it would fix my creep but I know that will not work either. I did not cut the vein out of my DP because I knew that would not help. I tested the turbo by routing the outlet reference straight to the WG acutator and then drove it. It holds about 15 psi for a second and then boost takes off.
There are two solutions to our problems-1) the 8cm housing on its way to you may not cure it 100% 2) An EWG-I ordered mine today-an UR with a 38mm Tial wastegate. This definitely kills the 20G creep and gives anywhere from 30-50 extra hp which will put me at around 400 safe hp (w/meth).
Good luck with all that and I tell you, I have been there and back in the last few days with this, making sure of the correct solution and the infalibility of said solution.

Actually no, 20G turbos are not prone to boost creep, I don't know where people are getting this from.

An EWG will certainly fix the problem, however, I don't have it in mind to spend another $400 right now on one. Plus im here now in Atlanta and if it can be fixed by a different exhaust housing then so be it.

Its the standard 7cm housing.

Doug told me first hand that taking out the divider has helped many boost creep issues that arise with the APS TBE.

This thread has me willing to drive to Atlanta this spring (storing car until then). I planned on seeing my god-daughter and visiting P&L...she can wait, hehe.

In my opinion you will not regret going to Top Speed.

I haven't seen it so I have no idea. All Robert said was that it was a prototype that they have been using.

You need to do more homework (like I didn't) about 20Gs and boost creep. Not to start anything because believe me, I am right there with you brother.

That ought to keep you busy for awhile. I know it did me! It also scared the hell out of me. If you are able to get an EWG for $400, jump on it! Hey, the EWG is good for another 30-50hp as well and voila! no more creep.
