Default Is Costco gasoline any good, or is it crap?

I recently became a Costco member and noticed that 92 octane is about $0.20 less per gallon than Chevron. I Have always used Chevron fuel, but the price difference has lead me to wonder if there is really any difference.

Any thoughts?

Yeah we swore that our BJ's gas was crap compared to other places because we noticed EGT changes when running it. I think the batch was just different for whatever reasons??? There are only so many places gas comes from and it supposed to be checked and regulated by the states so our paranoid thoughts probably are wrong...

Gas is gas, as was mentioned. The only differences are the detergents that are used in it nowadays, I believe. That's probably where the descrepancy in EGT changes are eminating from.

I don't want this to become a debate on which different brands of gas are better (or which brands of oil...or what oil change intervals to use...or whether synthetic oil is really that much better than dino juice), so I'll just comment on the price.

Costco gas is also cheaper near where I live. But if you get one of the many credit cards that gives you back 5% on purchases at gas stations (I have the ones from Discover and Citibank), the prices at the non-Costco stations can actually be cheaper. Let's say gas at your local station was $3.20. Gas at Costco would have to be cheaper than $3.04 ($3.2 x 0.95) in order for it to be truly cheaper. Factor in the long lines that can build up at Costco plus anything you want to say about Costco gas versus other gas brands, and the numbers can go up or down.

At least for me, www.gasbuddy.com seems to be a pretty good way of finding out local gas prices (you can search by area and brands of gas).

I'll stick by my original statement, quasi-interesting read but mostly a commercial for "toptier" IMHO.

ALL the GAS in the US goes thru the SAME pipe lines to reach it's particular destination (local distributor). The gas is then given it's "Brand name additives" and delivered to it's brand name filling station. What that means is the Chevron gas and the Shell gas come out of the same pipe, Cheveron adds there additives and delivers it to the Chevron station etc. The ONLY difference between the gas at 2 different stations is the additives. I was very supprised to learn that the DESEL also goes thru the VERY SAME pipe lines. The mixed fuel that comes out between batches is sold to industry as a lower grade fuel.
I cannot find my resource right now but there are only a hand full of interstate pipe lines and they are used by all the brand names.

I know some old school mechanics (who have done it for 30 years).. they say they can tell what kinda gas an engine has been running after several eyars and it really does matter.

Since when does costco sell gas? I've never seen that before. I would buy if it was .20 cheaper a gallon...
