Default Gas level problem???

I just noticed this problem the other night when filling up. I filled it up and topped it off, the same gas and the same price that im use to. I get back in the car and start it, but it only reads 3\4 tank full, after some driving it eventually rose to 7\8 tank but still not reading a full tank. Anyone else have this problem and know what the cause might be????

Make sure you turn the car off when you gas it. If you dont, it will take a while to show the correct amount of fuel. Hope this helps

It's happened to me a twice in the 10k miles I've had my car. Always turn the car off, etc when filling up. If I remember correctly it's always been when I've been pretty low on gas.

It ususally takes about 10 miles to get back to where it should be. If it stays there I'd take it to the dealer. There are a few other posts around here regarding this problem.

Search around.

Anyone know if you have to turn the key all the way to OFF or if just turning it to ACC works?

Never had that problem, after filling up the gauge reads a bit above full.

Same problem here. Seems like something causes the pump to shut off early. I usually force a few more gallons in until I can hear the pitch change of the gas in the filler neck. Then it always reads full. It doesn't happen all the time but just filling up I can tell by how much went in if it's been underfilled.

I had a similar problem in my 02 WRX, except that it would always OVERfill. The pump would shut off but only when the filler neck spit a few ounces back at me. Got the dreaded "could not duplicate" by the dealer several times for that problem. They said they took apart the filler and vent tubes but didn't see anything wrong.

There's probably a flaw somewhere in the Suby tank/filler design.

I've experienced both problems in my '05 STi at certain pumps at certain gas stations. Most of the problematic pumps shut off early. Occasionally they shut off too late and a few splashes come out of the overflow tube. Vapor recovery nozzles are the worst for that. If I find a pump that works properly on the first try, it seems to top it off right every time.

So, yeah, now I estimate how many gallons it'll take & listen for the pitch change in the filler tube.

I've never experienced this problem. I have about 6800 miles on my 05 STi.

It happens almost every time for me. I have found that different pumps at the same gas station work and other don’t. There is one pump at the local shell station that will fill me up and put more gas in the car and all rest give me 3/4 of a tank with less gas.

I think they made the filler pipe too small and it makes the pump cut of too soon.

It does piss me off because i can never get a full tank of gas.

Yeah, I sit there adding more gas until the neck is just about full (yeah, I know we're not supposed to, but with the STi mileage, every additional drop of gas is worth it ). What I do is while the pump is going on "auto", I'll grab a couple of paper towels and stick them between the nozzle and the bottom of the filler area. That way, if the gas spurts out when the pump hits auto-shut off, the towels will catch the splash instead of it going on my paint. Also allows me to wipe the area clear of dirt/dust when I'm done (assuming the towel didn't get any gas on it).

So im getting the impression that this is a pump malfuction and not fuel indicating system problem with the car. I will try diiferent pumps, and different gas stations, so far it has happened twice at the same shell gas station.

I've also had this happen a few times in my 19k miles. But (in my case anyway) it's strictly a gas gauge problem, and not a problem with when the pumps click off at the station. I get the expected number of gallons (12ish, say) but the gauge only goes up to the 3/4 mark. Then, over the course of driving, the needle slowly creeps up. But it happens slowly - if I happen to be driving a lot on the day of the fillup, the needle will just stay stationary until I am really at 3/4, then go down normally. Otherwise, it might take a day or so to correct itself upwards. If that makes any sense...

The other day, the pump shut off for me prematurely. I thought I got away with a good deal at the tank

However, just to advise those of you who put the pump on auto...at one gas station, when the auto cut-off kicked in, it actually ejected the pump from the gas tank. It shot out, and then due to the hose being a bit twisted, it forced it back into the side of my car, dumping the residual gas on the side, and leaving a surface abrasion (I buffed out when I got home).

From now on, I am going to hold the nozzle, and make sure it stays in there. This makes me wonder if the STi has some sort of unique pressure cutoff, that actually increases the pressure in the fuel resevior too much, and causes an early shutoff and/or ejection of nozzle.

It doesn't matter where I get gas, it won't go up past 7/8ths and I make sure it is full. For some it may be a pump problem but I still believe there is an issue with the float/sensor asssembly in the tank.
