After reading through this thread, and being a newbie, I am a bit confused. I see people saying that they have never launched hard because they value the money they spent. I don't get that.

I am the type of person who is willing to understand other people's perspectives, and will not be ignorant. So can somebody please explain why you would be the Subaru WRX STI just to baby it? I mean, it seems to me that if you are going to do it for the looks alone, you might want to save the money getting the 2.5 RS or the WRX, and add a wing, etc...

Maybe I am one of the more aggressive drivers, but I have only had the car 3 weeks, and have already launched hard a few times. When you see the 0-60 times and 1/4 mile times, these aren't as good as they are because off engine power as much as it is because of the ability to grip all 4 wheels on hard launches where you won't have wheel spin, and can outlaunch basically anything on 4 wheels.

Just curious why people by the STI for pleasure driving, not for hardcore driving?

I hear where you're coming from, but the fact is that launching the car hard is by far one of the worst things you can do short of a 5th to 2nd gear mis-shift... and you can still drive your car "hardcore" without launching it.

if you want to understand, then understand that some people don't want to damage their STI's, even if it means not having the thrill of an awd launch (though, I am unfortuately not one of those people )

I agree with both sides but don't agree with the argument that road racing the STi is easier on it than drag racing; the parts that experience wear & tear are just different. Drag racing stresses the tranny, diffs, axles, tires, clutch. Road racing places prolonged stress on the engine, wheel bearings, struts, diffs, tires, turbo and other bits. So I can't say I agree when people say "I don't want to abuse my STi drag racing, I would rather do what it is meant to do and road race/autox" as though things aren't "abused" when road racing/autoxing.

50 hard street launches at like 6k.I launch really high so I can chirp the tires and not bog.I usually do not smell clutch and just hold on while I'm getting shot out of a cannon.I dumped my clutch ONCE @7k...wheelhop was present....1st and 2nd gear in my car do not seem to pull hard at all so by launching my car @ 6k I barely use them.

No more than 20 for me and they all were no higher than 5500. I must be doing something right to be cutting a 1.67/60ft and a 8.1 in the 1/8th when I was only stg.2. I've gotten to where now I don't smell clutch at all really after launching. To be honest, i'm trying to baby the clutch now so I will have enough time to get a new one after installing my green and shooting for 400whp. I'm almost sure it's going to slip at that power level. I just gotta make it last.

1 or 2. It wasn't hard the way some people call it hard. It was at 4k and most of the force went to the clutch but the car took off like a mofo. They key is, I was building boost on it so I knew I didn't have to rev too high for it to go.

I was like DAAAMN! because I'm used to it bogging down. No bog down. Just took off. went 4k, 3.7k then ---->7k faster than I had ever seen with a very satisfying turbo splool sound into second and 3rd.. Just so much fun.

The second time I had my wife on the car and wanted to scare her. I have whinpy all season tires so I did hear some rubber crying out at the rear. Again it must have been 4k max. After that I could say I had done it and no need to repeat it.

I think launching softer but with boost instead of clutch drops makes for a less torture experience and fights bogs better. But i'm not doing that anymore

I had my car for almost 3 years now and the only hard launch (5k) I did was 2 days ago. There was a huge clutch smell afterwards, so I probably will not be doing that again anytime soon. I probably only launch about 2 times since owning my STi .

I know I know - I've totally missed the point of my car.
