I love Porsche but I would rather buy a STi than a 8-10 year old Porsche (which probably still costs more.)

By the way, I moved this thread to the General forum as this really has nothing to do with Subaru News & Rumours.

Bring back Audi to Rally mit good "old" Hans Stuck at the wheel.

Sorry, Hans Stuck was never a rally car driver. He did drive the Audi 5000's in the Trans-Am series in the late '80's but never rally cars. Walter Rohrl and Michelle Mouton were Audi's factory World Rally driver's during the Group B era.

Legacy GT and STI family here. Looked at the Mazda. Looked cheap build to me. Subaru's reputation far exceeds theirs.

Exclamation More Mazda discussions

"You're joking right? If you're so pissed, why did you get a 2006 STi? There are still plenty of 2005s available..."

I do not have an Sti. I wrote this profile in early 2005, hoping the redesign would be more appetizing.

After seeing the facelift in 2004 I was sure that the Impreza's design would lead into a more masculine aggressive look. I think the problems started with the introduction of the ex-Alfa designer. I am tempted to buy the 2005, before they are gone.

best part about the LGT: Coming from a former STi owner... when you drive it.. you know its got STi DNA in there. It just feels similar... hard to describe.

First of, I didn't know the MazdaSpeed 6 hit the showroom floor, I'd like to test drive it.

Second, if I was to worry about what other people think about me or how my car looks all day, I'd probably die from a heart attack.

YOU SHOULDN'T CARE WHAT PEOPLE THINK, I DON'T CARE HOW OLD YOU ARE.

I really can't stand this bs with "what will my co-workers think if I drive this near the office" WHO THE F*** CARES...

Test drive the STi, Legacy and the Mazda. Buy whichever one makes you happy.

My girl friends mother wanted basicaly a nice car to get to work in and AWD was a must for her since she always has to get to work. she went from a 95 corrola to a BMW33Xi that mean AWD for all the people who dant speak Bimma. she said it was worse in the snow then her ten year old corrola. just FYI if you are looking for nice AWD sedan our coup.
she says she seriously regrets not getting the legacy GT. she says the inside is also better in the legacy but the status sybol got her.

but man take the legacy GT out that thing crazy hard on the HW. also I have a friend that put a vf39 and some other STI parts along with EM. he is making 290WHP and 340 WTQ with less then 2500 in mods. not bad

Then she got what she deserved. A G35x would have been a better choice over the 3 series.

Default STi vs Mazdaspeed6

Honestly, I don't know how you can compare these two cars. The STi is a balls-out, hard core, ultra performance, no-compromise machine. The Mazdaspeed6 is a slightly heated-up Mazda 6, but it's not in the same league as the STi (or the Evo).

The STi is not for everybody - you really have to be willing to live with a stiff, noisy ride and the stripped down "race car for the street" feel to truly enjoy the iti. The Mazdaspeed would be a better choice for those who want some civility with a measure of performance in a reasonable priced package. Drive both you'll see what I mean. Just don't go and buy an STi then complain about how uncivilized it is.

Don't be ignorant. Mazda builds exceptional cars, they are innovative and unique, much like subaru. I don't know which mazdas you owned or saw, i don't care either. Reliability is not an issue with most mazdas, and like all manufacturers, there will be certain lemon cars amongst the rest. Don't base your ideas on a handful of cars you saw.

The most unreliable car mazda made is the FD3S, but that car is an entirely different beast altogether. Few understood back then, even now few understand rotaries.

Anyways, back on topic.

These questions always rest on personal taste. The best test to see which suits your purpose is test driving both cars. I would not buy ANY car without test driving it. If the dealership is interested in your business it will indulge you in multiple test drives if that is what it takes you to make your decision. Once you have taken these you will know which is right for you.

More directly to your Q; Mazda makes an excellent car. My first car was a mazda 626 turbo and my girl friend currently drives a mazda 3. The quality of both of those cars is and was excellent compared to its competition(in the era each was built obv). Hell, the Mazda 3's interior quality is as nice as my 04 STi's and it costs like 10gs less. Dont let quality concerns hold you back.
However, since most everyone in this forum owns an STi or aspires to own one you already know what their choices are. They could have bought a MS6s, but did not; that says a lot.

In the end though if the boy racer looks and higher NVH of the STi really bother you more than the performance thrills you, then the car is not for you and you should consider the more luxurious LGT or MS6. But understand that they will not be as fast as the no compromise STi. If you want the best of both worlds spend the money and get either a Proche, an S4, or an M3; they might suit you better in the long run.
