This thread is just asking for another parent buying kid conversation and a bunch of stories that people dont really care about..'oh well i had to earn this blah blah and do it buy doing this blah blah blah'. wow, how many hours a week do you work? I work a normal 40 hour week job. does that piss you off that I dont make payments on my car, but I work enough that I could if i had to? this isn't a life or death situation. stop acting like its the end of the world because you have to pay for somethin that I dont have to.

anyways congrats to everybody 20 and under who paid for their own car. happy you get your what...well earned respect from an internet board? stop breaking your back over something that isn't at all, that big of deal...seriously.

p.s. crazyviet - its called
1) rich daddy
2) rich daddy who feels guilty - this is a variation on number 1. Usually caused by a divorce or a daddy who travels too much, so he can't go to Junior's tennis matches.

You see, a 16 yr old, no matter how hard he works, can't sign for a car, can't register a car, can't insure a car. Because he's a minor.

What parent would buy their kid a 300 hp , 30 K car is beyond me. I grew up in an affluent town with kids whose parents gave them stuff. Almost all of them are useless turds now.

I started racing motorcycles at age 10. Every week after a race, I would work with my dad and come up with a list of things to fix before the next race. He was NOT a "little league dad". He saw it as a way for me to learn responsibility and respect for things mechanical. He didn't really care how well I finished. No pressure. I got a kiss on the helmet whenever I finished, no matter how poorly I finished.

When I was 13 my dad said that if I wanted a new race bike I'd have to earn it. I obviously couldn't get a job at that age. He also didn't want me working during the school year, my job was to study. So that summer he came up with a list of tasks and their dollar value towards the new bike. So even at 13, I was forced to EARN it.

When I turned 16 and could get a summer job he would match any money I made and put towards a bike. That helped me afford new race bikes, but he wasn't GIVING it to me. I also had to do all my own wrenching.

I think my dad gave me MUCH MUCH more than just the opportunity to have some great weekends together. He forced me to learn to respect machinery and taught me that there is satisfaction well beyond just owning something, when you've worked for it.

(stepping off soap box)
I very much wish that my dad and I shared a relationship like you and yours. My Dad is the type to say that racing cars isn't normal and that I'm just destroying an poor investment. He would much rather see me put money towards something useless like a house. I like my aprt! Anyways, I hope to someday have the same type of relationship with my son (God willing there is a female stupid enought to let me breed with them ) as you and your Father had.

Geez, appear to be oldest here - 56
I was never the oldest on the other forums for my previous cars (Porsche, BMW, Vette, etc)
