It's a bummer that your friend had a bad experience, but you were misinformed. Do some research on this site and evom regarding each car's transmission and you'll learn to appreciate the 6 speed in the sti.

Well, you are gonna get a biased opinion on iwsti. BUT here you go, since I had an 03 Evo GSR before my STi.

Evo: HID Projector Kit headlights - More clarity and they look better
Sti: HID Projector Kit headlights - Light up the road more

Evo: Look sick *** hell
Sti: Look sick *** hell

Evo: Rock Solid Suspension
STi: Solid Suspension

Evo: Handling is spot on
Sti: Handling could be a touch better.

Evo: More unwanted attention than the STi. (even when I was wingless)
STi: More wanted attention, less ricers trying to race me. (I have a wrx trunk though)

Evo: No cruise control, but really that doesnt matter unless ur going C2C
Sti: Cruise control, convenient, but not needed.

Evo: Seats more comfortable, due to the fact that the GSR recaros are worth 1400.
Sti: Nice seats, but they shouldve put Sparco or Recaro standard, price would go up

Evo: Less expensive for mods
Sti: tad bit more expensive for mods

Evo: Responds fantastically to mods and even simple bolt ons.
Sti: Responds well.

Sti: Torque, Torque, oh and did I mention Torque? (meaning they have lots of it; edited for clarification purposes )
Evo: Could do better in this department

Sti: Boosts smoother

Evo: Bigger Turbo

Sti: Boxer Rumble

Evo: Still sounds mean, but just not a boxer rumble

Evo: 2.0 !!!
STi: 2.5 (USDM obviously)

If you wish to look at my old Evo, feel free. Same as my STi

Honestly I originally chose the EVO but after the absolutely awful dealer experience I had I decided to get the STI. I went to the dealer with a bank check in my pocket and was told I would not be able to drive the EVO unless I bought it. I argued with the salesman and then the sales manager and it ended with me walking out in a fury. I then went to a Subie dealer (the next day or so later) and walked out within hours as happy as ever...Very glad I did too.

At times I do think of what type of EVO I would have built but overall I am happy with my STI .

Definitely true. Much more versitile

Isnt that annoying, the exact same thing happened to me. They just watched me like a hawk, because I guess they think I was going to do something to them.

Yeah its hard to pick a car when you cant test drive. Funny thing is I drove both an Evo and an STI at the Suby dealer.

My 07 tranny seems pretty tough to me.

The Evo is a cool car but it wasn't even an option for me.

I like the fact that you can't testdrive the evo until you buy it. Like if it was an evo x I would feel better that ammature salesmen or ricer boys have driven it wrongly.
My dad bought an e60 m5 and they won't let you drive it before you by it. It is special. You get to take the virginity!
