Default too long too fast part 2

ok guys this is the second part of my driving too fast and my car overheating thread. I wanted to update the situation and see if we can come up w something else that could be wrong. I am still taking the car into the dealer but i am looking to know how to better asses the situaton and learn more about my car.

i was told that a head gasket would be the problem and to check for oil in the coolent and coolent in the oil. First off all i found a leak on the bottom of the upper radiator hose. No coolent in the oil and I flushed the coolent and no sign of oil. I tried to fill it back up and i would not hold 2 gals or 8.1quarts is there something wrong? I have to warm it up to running temp and turn it off to add a small amount. I was trying to see if it wouldnt overheat so i could get it to my friends house and then the dealer.

the car would warm up normally and the the fans would turn on an then you could notice the temp guage rise very slowly but it would keep going and i would turn it off and then when cool be able to put more coolent in. So now im going to tow it to the dealer but does anyone know whats wrong or have any idea why this keeps happening? I appreciate all the help and ideas, thanks guys

You have air pockets in your cooling system. Start the engine, and add coolant as it runs. It'll stop taking when the radiator is full, but when the thermostat opens, you should be able to add the rest (or most of the rest) as the water pump pushes it around the block.

Synopsis: fill when running and warming up.

Maybe there's an air bubble at the thermostat and it's not opening correctly.
Maybe there's an obstruction.
Maybe the sender is faulty.
Maybe your water pump is jacked (not flowing properly)
Maybe your radiator is plugged.

Just guesses. I wouldn't know unless I saw it I guess.

On a similar note, all of the fins on my radiator are smashed flat by bugs, rocks, birds, etc, etc, etc.

Anybody think that could cause cooling (think airflow) problems down the road? There has been nothing wrong for the last 63000 miles, but am I getting ready to need a new one?

thanks buddy it took the whole load lol. but i still have the leak and coolent started leaking but it held a steady temp for awhile but as soon as i took it 100 feet the temp rose noticeably. That shouldnt be bc of the hose and i guessing its something bigger or am i wrong? I am taking it to the dealer but any info or ideas would be great, thanks

Run the car at idle with the radiator cap off until the fans come on and you see coolant moving (indications that the thermostat has opened.) If you have bubbles trapped in the cooling system you may need to run it that way for quite a while before you work them all out.

thanks wdband i did that and got all the coolent in but the radiator hose has a hole and leaks coolent while idle when fully warmed up. it didnt leak enough to not have enough in the system but it will only hold at normal temp for 5 mins or a little less before the temp rises twards overheating. Does that happen because of the coolent leaking out or a bigger problem? thats where im stuck.

you should probably fix the coolant leak (replace the hose) and get back to us.

i was thinking of doing that and seeing if thats it but i still have the warranty so might as well get as much out of it as i can so i want them to look at it and tell me if anything is wrong or damaged. I just called all local auto part stores and the hose is ganna cost me about $25 and a few days to ship it in and i guess it wouldnt hurt to have an extra hose around because i can just slap the old one on a mile from the dealer and still have them check it out

ok has anyone had this problem??? I ordered the upper radiator hose and swaped them out and i took a look at the old hose and it had a chunk ripped out of it. The fans where to blame, they were scratched and dull on most blades except a few. I checked the hose before taking it off and it was pretty secure..... anyone have a problem?

Also like i said before coolent splashed everywhere and the car keeps smoking while idle and after a quick spin. Plus there is a horrible smell im guessing is the coolent burning off but i didnt think it would be that bad. The new hose has solved the temp issue so that good but about the smoke and smell, how long should i expect it to last? Thanks guys

You may have a broken motor mount.

Cooking coolant has a sickening sweet smell, and the 'smoke' is light and white -- because it's really steam, not smoke. Oil smoke is gray or bluish, heavier looking, and it smells like oil.
