Default Testdrove the new Mitsubishi EVO X..

Had the opportunity to drive the new EVO today, i went in there excited like a kid, and open minded with a really good friend of mine that has an 07 Imola orange S2000.. SICK Car! .

This is the first year Canada has gotten the EVO, since previous generations were unfortunately not admissable. I was always wondering how the previous gens drive.. I bet they are raw and nice as the previous gen STI, no doubt. Comming from an Integra type r, someone told me I'd like the EVO's (04-06) better over the STI. Doesn't matter regardless, because im in Canada.

Anyway, on the the EVO X..

WOW, what an amazing front end. It looks like a transformer giving you the stare down, GORGEOUS. I can't say much about the side profile, or rear because its not that appealing to me..

Seats are really snug, almost a bit too snug I feel to be in for a long commute. Really cheap material though, car only had 60 miles and you can already see wear on the Recaros,

The interior, GROSS. You are surrounded by cheap cheap cheap plastic, its like sitting in a econo-car like a yaris or a corolla. Esp the shift boot, wow did that look like cheese.. did i mention CHEAP?

On to the drive, the clutch has huge bog delay.. but it seemed like it had a hole lot of lag. Higher up in the RPMS it had a pull, very linear -not explosive. Kinda boring. *yawn* I was REALLY let down.. and the shifting was sloppy, and 3rd gear had an etch to it. My friend noticed that too when he drove it a day earlier. Sure as hell didn't sound as good as a boxer rumble either!

Handling was great, real tight and nimble for a big car like that, same with the brakes.

After driving it fo 20 minutes, and not being impressed by any of its features, i thanked the salesman and told him that its not what i expected. He asked me what it was that i expected, I told him I was looking for a fun explosive car, the car seemed boring.

He was like, 'Boring??? Ill show you boring! you aren't driving it hard enough!"

So, i pulled over, and he sat in the driver seat. So, here is this 60 year old dude that claims he raced cars before LAUNCHES the car and takes off like a bat out of hell with the clutch roasting, HAHAHA.. 1st, 2nd, 3rd... he was going like 140km/h in a 60 zone, there was a STOP sign comming up, and he dumps it into 2nd gear! and leaves it there with the motor humming for like 10 seconds comming to a halt and says 'Who needs brakes???' LOLOLOLOLOLOL

My friend was in the back seat, so we look over at eachother and have this WTF is this seriously happening look on our facesthe car was @ like 9500rpms! 9500 RPMS!!!!! OMFG!

Anyway, we get back and we go over some numbers, and its like $53,000 CDN TAXES IN. for that 5 spd model with the aero package and all sorts of addons.. I laughed inside

Anyway, getting back into my 06 STI, and I know this is going to sound so cliche... MAN do i LOVE and appreciate my STI!! I went sideways out of the mitsubishi parking lot (its an empty road) shift into 2nd gear and think to myself, THIS IS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT! YEAH. The car is SOO responsive, so EXPLOSIVE.. Something that EVO X LACKS.

Cliffnotes; The new EVO is boring, and the only reason i'd buy one is if i was a middle aged man that wants a new model of something for no particular reason other than having something new. Because the car sucks.

Hope i didn't offend anyone, or sound like some overzealous typical STI owner, but i seriously went there with an open mind.

Cheers!

I really dislike it when salesmen drive the car hard. It really makes you wonder how many times he did that before. The same thing happened to me in an RX-8 back in 2005 when they were really hot. I just left seeing as how I did not want to buy a beat on car. Ugh.

Where there any EVO X MRs at the dealer by any chance?

This is why you want to make sure that any new car you buy has as few miles on it as possible. I had a salesman one time tell me a car was new even though the dealer's son had taken the car to Spring Break in Florida. Ya, you heard that right, he tried to explain why a car I was looking at that had 1500 miles or so on it was still going for new car prices by telling me it had been used by the dealer's college age son to go to spring break. I backed away slowly and never went back to that dealer.

They supposably "improved" the Evo X interior from the one the Evo 9 had............is it still that horrible?

Its not great but the seats are nice. Thats one thing I would want from the evo lol. Also on another note when I test drove the evo x the clutch felt electronic and didn't feel like a real clutch.

face it, subaru and mitsubishi now build big sloppy fat-ass boogiebarges for big sloppy fat-ass american behinds. wake me up when either one of them goes back to building anything under 3150 lbs.

I saw the X way back in Jan-Feb when they first started making it out to the east coast. I think stock they look crappy, but man oh man just throw some wheels on it with a drop and it looks awesome.

The new STI however looks pretty good the way it rolls off the show room floor. White + Gold = sex oh wheels.

Having put 30k in 1 year on my IX MR I can say that while the interior leaves some to be desired, is not as bad as I remember the X being. I dunno I just don't like the new interior. Of course I said the same thing about the Evo VIII's when I was looking at buying an STI. Then I saw the IX's where they re-did the seats and interior slightly and I was hooked. I just didn't like the blue seats on the VIII but I didn't mind the blue seats in the STI. Then I road in my friends for a couple weeks and it grew on me and doesn't bother me at all. Not particular about it and still like my IX interior better.

Now having been in all cars I can say that the nicest interior out of all of them goes to the 2008 STI, then 2004-2007 STI, then the IX, VIII and finally the X. I haven't drive the 08 or X yet though. The STI's seem to have a less "cheap" feel and look to them. Its funny because some parts of my interior seem super cheap while others seem high quality. Hard to explain, but the the STI has an all around nice look and feel although I like the look of my interior better which is purely my opinion since I've put so many miles on it in the past year.

Although all the STI's I've been in have had interior rattles where all the Evo's I've been in have none including my friends FULLY built evo with metal motor mounts. I don't know how he remained rattle free with 520awhp and custom guages in his glove box.

The only thing I'm jealous over STI owners interior wise is their guage cluster. Its soooo bright...the Evo's is pretty crappy not gunna lie. If I could somehow get the STI guages in my Evo I probably would've done it by now. lol The ultimate setup would be to get the stock evo guages with the same illumination as the sti....now that would be nasty.

This is the greatest thing in the world, plus it basically says you are allowed to do the same..............nice to be able to do some real testing when you are spedning 30+k.

We have an evo dealership that took my pops for a ride as well as he did the same. I wasn't with him, but I heard about it. Keep in mind the dealer develops perf. parts for the evo/tests them. Well my dad took em sideways thru a couple turns and they did the same for him. He really enjoyed it and normally is the guy who hates car salesmen.

Just funny if you finally get someone that allows you to romp the car some and you will complain.

The worst part about it is that the engines have not had any time to break in and seat, and these salesmen and techs are ripping on them running them to redline constantly. After the nice "spirited" drive, lets go in side and talk some numbers....

This is why I had them dig the one out of the corner that had like 6 miles on it and was still covered in the protective plastic.
