Default Driving too fast for too long???

ok i was driving down the new toll road a couple nights ago and its mostly empty and it was 4am so long story short i ran my car up to 160mph a couple of times and each lasted about 30 seconds. So after the fun i was almost home and i noticed my car was over heating and when i got home it was smoke and coolent galore. I had checked the coolent about a week earlier so it was at the right level so could it have been the excesive speed??? or the hoses were just not sitting right??? or should i be worried??? Thanks

Sounds like you got it hot enough to lift the heads. You might need head gaskets, possibly also new head studs.

That's rough man. I've done 160 a few times myself but only once had a problem. Cold morning and I think it over boosted then fuel cut.

Wow, these cars should be able to do that all day long. Were you low on any fluids?......like coolant?

The engine was not meant to be at 6,500-7,000 for long periods of time, at least not the stock engine. It will over heat and hell will brake lose, and it has already broken lose

On a public road no less. I agree with the above. From what I've read, it's probably going to be head gaskets.

What mods on your STI?

Overheating and head gasket problems go hand in hand. If it didn't overheat because of a blown headgasket, it probably has a blown head gasket due to overheating

Head gasket problems are a pain. My engine is getting a complete rebuild, new piston, new rod, rehone, new rings, decked block/heads, etc etc etc all due to a head gasket problem.

Let's see.....4:00 a.m. so it's dark outside and you're traveling 160 MPH. That's a recipe for disaster.

It's a good idea to never over-drive the useful range of your headlights. If you do that you have very little chance of seeing debris in the road, wildlife that may be near the edge of the road, a stopped vehicle, road damage or imperfections, etc.

Furthermore, when doing high speed runs in a CONTROLLED environment it's useful to make sure you've visually inspected the wheels and tires for damage or defects, verified your tire pressures, verified your lug nuts are properly torqued, etc. I assume you didn't do any of these things because this all seems very "spur of the moment".

I strongly suggest you resist the urge to do top speed testing on public motorways and when you do it in a controlled enviornment, that you do it only after having taken the proper precautions, etc. It'll be better for you and for your car.

Good luck with the car.

Gary

ok first of all i really apreciate all the info and advice. my mod list is basic but most likely will void the warrenty. I have an aps 65mm intake, catless aps tbe and a cobb ap. I had just checked the coolent like a week before and it was a little low but i filled it up so it had enough so that couldnt have been the reason. Do you think if i revert back to stock i could take it in to the dealer because i know if i tak it in as is i will get charged full price for everything and they will blame the mods. I have almost 31,000 miles so i should still be covered. What do you guys think? Is it still ok to drive around or is it the gaskets and i should get it cheked out right away? i havent drove it since but its a little of a pain borrowing a car everyday but will be don if needed.

Also do you think the turbo could be damaged because of boost spike?
