so i live i socal. and i left my house to go get some jamba juice
and drove down the street, i live in a nice neighborhood, and there are signs that say servey crew ahead, so i slow down to the cones and it is a check pont for smog. there is a little crew set up (kinda like a mini dyno) to check to see if u pass smog, nd of coursether there is a highway patrolman there either waving people to pass or stopping them to talk or check for smog. he waves the people in front of me,but by now i know u have guessed it, he stops me. has me pull to the side where 2 old beat up vans are. one on the smog checker and one just finished. he told me to pull aside and he just looked at the front left of my car and said ok u can back out and leave wen it is safe..... so i left. weird thing is this smog crew has been here be4 and i was stopped about a yr ago wen i didnt have my STi and the cop asked if i wanted a smog check to see if i pass.lol. what is weird but very cool is that he didnt ask me anything at all...either he relized my car was awd and the smog machine was for 2wd only...or he jus liked me car.lol. idk. long and pointles maybe but its about 1am and i just started work and im bored.lol....just goes to show u how cali tries to trick u into getting a ticket. and i would have been f*cked cuz im catless.lol

I got a notice in the mail a couple years ago when I was in my '97 altima (completely stock, ran good) saying that I didn't pass emissions. I remembered a little station set up on the highway onramp, that, as it turns out, had been checking peoples cars for emissions compliance...

when I talked to the guy at the inspection station that I went to to get proof of my innocence (one reason the ordeal was total BS....I'm just glad I was almost due for an inspection anyways) he said that they always put the checks on a highway on ramp where people are accelerating hard (I always had to go WOT to get to highway speed in that pos) and nearly every car that goes through will fail. They just do it when they need a little more ticket revenue, since some of the cars that do fail will actually have high emissions.



The checkpoint thing is even worse if you ask me...I'm assuming that they don't let you operate the car while its on the dyno? Sounds like an excuse to get you to allow a cop to have control of your vehicle, thereby allowing them to search without probable cause or a warrant.

they have some of those here in colorado set up right before you get on highways..but its all automatic..has a thing that detects the smog and i guess if its bad and you dont pass, it will take a pic of your back license plate

havent seen one with actual people or patrolmen

I don't care if it's for DUI, or for emissions, or whatever -- stopping law abiding citizens randomly just to **** with them ought to be illegal in the USA. I'll never live in a state that pulls that crap.

I've heard you are suppose to shut your car off and coast by, does the cop really have the right to force you? I mean he is obviously profiling?

same here in texas, my dad drives a diesel van and truck and when every we see one he stomps on it so it spits out a black cloud. i tend to avoid them in my sti just to avoid the hassle with it.

but yeah that sucks about that **** in cali man

ya u can because i did about a yr ago wen i had a chevy s-10 that was cammed and i was not gonna pass smog, so i said no to him and he let me pass... but still sux as, because most people would almost asume they cant say no

WTF!!!!!!!!! I actually forgot about this sorta thing no joke... I read in like the LA Times not too long ago, about them installing some smog machines on freeway on ramps and exits, and it will test you without you even knowing it and take a picture of your license plate and send you a ticket... lolol Effing California mannnnnnnn!!
