Default Crashed my car- Have a few ?'s

So I crashed my car last week.... Yeah, it sucks! Anyway, I basically lost control and hit a few curbs- my rims and suspension are fked! The car is in the shop right now getting inspected/fixed. I talked to the owner of the shop and he said it's going to be around 14k in repairs. I was just wondering what can I expect from my insurance company (State farm)? Up until now, my driving record has been perfect. Do you guys think my monthly payment will go up substantially? How long will it take for my insurance claim to clear? Is there a possibility my insurance company will deny my claim? Thanks!

I work for State Farm. I dont handle property damage (PD) but I can brake some info down for you as far as claims.

If your driving record was perfect, you can most likely expect and increase in premiums when it comes time to renew. I cant say how much, but you are going to want to talk to your agent and they should be able to give you somewhat of an idea. Typically premiums increase when you are at fault for an accident, which in this case you were.

I dont see a reason why they would deny your claim. State Farm is pretty good about taking care of their own. If your car was taken to a service first shop, they will do the estimate and all the repairs at that shop. If it was not taken to a service first shop, SF will send out an estimator to get their own estimate of the vehicle. Once they have that they will give the OK to the shop to start repairs. If there are any further damages found, they will do what is called a supplement estimate and pay for the additional damages.

Im not sure what you mean by your "insurance claim to clear." If you mean off of your record, that depends on your state. In NY it takes 3.5 years for an accident to fall off of your record. That is another question you may want to ask your agent or your adjuster.

Hope this was helpful. If you have any other questions, Ill do my best to answer them for you. Good luck with the repairs.

I guess what I meant was how long does it usually take for them to approve a claim so the shop can start working on my car? Also, they briefly mentioned "accident forgiveness" and that I might be eligible for it because of my driving record?... Can you explain to me what exactly it is and how it would benefit me? Thanks, I really appreciate your help!

Im not really familiar with Accident Forgiveness. I only handle the claims that come in. I have nothing to do with rates and how it effects your premiums. That is where your SF Agent comes in. They should be able to answer all your questions as far as that goes.

Usually as soon as they do the estimate on your car and the property damage department gets a copy of your estimate, they will approve repairs right away. It usually takes anywhere from 3-5 days for an estimator to get out and look at the vehicle depending on their schedule. If you dont know when the estimator was sent out, call the claims department and they should be able to tell you or at least give you status on your claim.

when i totalled my 04 sti state farm paid what the car was worth which was 4k more than i owed so i got it paid off and 4k in my pocket which i used as a down payment for my 05. i had a perfect record until then also and SF said for a first time offence they could only raise my rates 10% which is about what they did i suppose. i went from 275/mo to 325/mo for about 6 months and then it went back to 275 for 6 months and ever since it has been at 220. so i dont think you should have anything to worry about. the only thing that sucked is they said since i didn't have a salvage license that i could not buy the totalled car and take parts off of it which sucked cuz it had alot of good parts on it still including the motor.

Damn, that sucks! Luckily, a majority of my damages (90%) are the suspension and wheels- there was no major body damage. Anyway, on the bright side, I might actually be getting some new wheels, tires, sways, etc. of my choice, instead of the OEM. I might have to pay a little extra, but it's alright. Two of my struts assemblies are completely gone and each of those are like $360- that's almost as much as some coil-overs! I'm actually not so sad anymore

Good luck getting it fixed. But from what I have seen, these cars take repairs well as long as they are done by a good shop.

Make sure you use a good shop!!! It took two shops and 48 days, no wait it getting pulleys replaced today. Make that 52 days now to get fixed all the way.

I've owned 2 cars that were totaled. IMO it's better that the insurance company totals the car out. True, the car may be able to be repaired, but I would always have doubts in my mind that it's not 100% repaired. I would rather start over with something fresh & new rather than repaired. Do you have GAP coverage?

is it worth fixing a car at 14000 in repairs?

i kind of equate the estimate with the extent of the damage, and at 14k i dont think i could truly ever feel the same way driving the car again..

WTF. With 14k in damage I would think they would total it.

Not on an 07. It is not enough damage. Typically to total a car the Cost of repairs + cost of salvage has to be equal or greater than 75% of the vehicle value to be a total loss. That formula varies slightly from one insurance company to the next. But it is a general rule of thumb.
