Default De-tuned wrx.... how?

Well since the loss of my04 sti, I have been wheelchairing and now walking my happy ass around. Enough is enough! Time to get behind the wheel again

I went by my local subie dealership today, and talked with my sales-gal. They have an 07 wrx limited on the lot, new, leather, sunroof, and very very nice. I didnt really romp it during the test drive, but I sure was impressed at the nice ride quality and quiet road noise.... at least in comparison to my04 sti. And it still had some pep to boot.

Here is my question, how hard would it be to make up the extra 69 horsepower and 64 torque that the sti comes equipped with?

Since they are both DOHC 2.5 boxer engines, I thought maybe the difference lies just in the intercooler, turbo size, and tune? Am I far off?

I like the luxury of the wrx limited, and was thinking that maybe with just a little $ invested it could possibly keep up with the sti (in a straight line, of course).

I did some searching here on the website, and this is what I came up with

ENGINE
2.5L SOHC: (NON-TURBO)
Horsepower: 173 HP @ 6000 RPM
Torque: 166 LB-FT @ 4400 RPM
2.5L INTERCOOLED TURBO
Horsepower: 224 HP @ 5600 RPM
Torque: 226 LB-FT @ 3600 RPM
2.5L INTERCOOLED HIGH-OUTPUT TURBO
Horsepower: 293 HP @ 6000 RPM
Torque: 290 LB-FT @ 4400 RPM

but this is as far as ive gotten on my search. I did some more and didnt really come up with anything substantial.

I have found some used sti's in the austin area, but they all have 40-50K miles on them and they want anywhere from 21-25K for them. I am just kinda deciding what to do with my money...

thanks for any input/help

The STi comes with a lot more than just power (six speed, suspension, etc). You should reassess your goals with the car...

Go stage 2 on the wrx (TBE, AP) and you should be as fast or faster than a stock sti in a straight line.

Edit: FWIW, I believe this only applies to the 06/07 wrx's as they came with the 2.5l,

I didn't know you were only concerned with the straight line capabilities. Sorry.

I now have an 04 WRX and after driven an STi I can say there's a big different on the tranny.
However, on engine talk, the 06/07 wrx have a 2.5 as compared to mine.
Either ones are nice, obviously since you owned one before you should be used to the handling/ MPG / other expenses.
I love my rex though =D

Why not get an 2008 WRX Limited or whatever trim levels they come in now? The new WRX sedans (not hatches) are quite nice and even weight less than the 2007 counterpart while adding additional safety like curtain airbags, VDC, more structural rigidity all the while having a nicer interior and saving weight. Other than the price, I don't see why an 07 WRX sedan should trump the 08 WRX sedan. Well, there's also looks, but I think the 08 WRX sedan looks kinda nice with its clean lines.

The 07 WRX Limited had a high MSRP of something like $27K-$28K...then again, I'm sure they're a lot cheaper now. But a 08 WRX sedan shoudln't cost that much more...I'm hoping.

I think it's a complete waste of money to do what you are seeking. Think long term, the resale value will be much lower than an sti and you will have modded it, which will only help in widening the resale gap and increasing your vehicle investment cost. If you're looking at spending $27-$28K for a wrx you might as well shop around for a new '07sti for $30,000 +fees (thats what I paid). A new '07 sti pulled up to a light with me last weekend. The guy had just drove off the lot and he said they had one or two more (los angeles).

STi turbo 400

STi intercooler 300

Get a tune and you have more power than a stock STi. So yeah it wouldnt be hard to get what you want. Granted the obvious drivetrain difference matter but it depends on what kind of a budget you are on.

If all you want to do is match a stock STi in power, it wont be that difficult.

Just keep this in mind: If you think you would ever want to modify it to really high levels, you will be quite restricted.
