Peak horsepower isn't really what's important here though. The 335 is making gobs of torque down low. The m3's motor is characterized by high-rev horsepower. Most m cars i've driven don't really have good low-mid range power. My m5 doesn't feel quick until 5500rpms.

the 335 is a 3.0 liter 6 cylinder with twin turbos. Nuff said as far as potential. Although it does make me nervous that the older m3's popped their tops when using forced induction pretty easily. Hopefully the bottom end is nice on the 335 motor. St. 2 u should be able to beat a 335 pretty easily, unless he is modded.
Keep in mind the turbos are doing 6lbs of boost stock if im correct?

you really think m cars don't have midrange power? or midrange torque.....they all seem to be short on the torque side and rev hi and make power up top instead.

potential is insane with that car. but stock, a stg.2 sti will walk on. 335 modded will for sure be a ridiculous force..... as we all agreed on.

So getting the Dinan software will not void warranty. What if you add a downpipe? Warranty gone then?

This is pretty sick for $40K with 4K miles, I'd take it over an 08 STi with 0 miles:

The Dinan software will not void your warranty as they are partnered with BMW. As far as the downpipe and other aftermarket products its just like anything else, they have to prove that the aftermarket part caused the failure of the part in question.

To me it looks like about equal gains are possible staying stock turbos/motor. No I doubt the bmw will last under that much boost, but I don't really know.

oh please. bwm 335 the next supra. pfff.

for what it's worth:

TEST DATA 335i (motortrend)

Acceleration to mph
0-30 1.8 sec
0-40 2.9
0-50 3.9
0-60 5.1
0-70 6.8
0-80 8.4
0-90 10.4
0-100 12.7
Passing, 45-65 mph 2.6
Quarter mile 13.7 sec @ 104.0 mph

2006 wrx sti (motor trend)
I think this sti was NOT stock (well subaru said it was and so does MT), but given stg2s run low 13s I feel it is a fair comparison to a stg2.

Acceleration to mph
0-30 1.3 sec
0-40 2.2
0-50 3.1
0-60 4.5
0-70 5.7
0-80 7.6
0-90 9.5
0-100 12.1
Passing 45-65 mph 2.5 sec 2.5 sec
Quarter Mile 13.0 sec @ 103.5 mph

Personal experience:
Driven a 335i. Nothing special for the money. My brother just bought one and I just know he will race me one of these days. So I'll let you all know how it goes. He'll lose I'm sure .

Points about the bmw:
True it makes lots of low end torque. This means little in 1/4 mile. The sti launches so ferociously, the BMW's low end torque advantage is neglected. Plus it does not last too long, a stg2 sti torque catches up fast. After that both cars make similar figures. The bwm won't catch the sti. It's a fat lady. That's why the sti on that video won.

It's a great car. I'd never tune a bwm since that's just too much $ to waste on an already expensive car. I'd just get a dumb ass domestic with a big V8 if all I want is to destroy people on a straight line. much cheaper. much more power.

As far as the stock sti, it will beat the bmw no question IMO. But the driver better know how to launch and how to shift. Weight is the enemy. Plus bwm owners all have fat asses from all their money, adding weight to the car

ok last line was a joke. the 335 "only" does 271tq at 5800 rmp and goes down from there. Don't be impressed by all the low end tq. Agree that comparing modified cars is silly. True you can have a 400whp bmw with all it's glorious 3585lbs of weight for under 50k. But if you then say that, I'd say for 50K, I'd take my 31k sti and use 19k on mods.

You want to place bets on these 50k monsters?..... yeah. stupid mod comparisions I know.

plus somebody said that subaru "overstated" their hp? NO! It's because AWHP is lower on an AWD car!. Read about drivetrain loss and you'll know why. Did bwm understate the hp? probably. not by much. After all they can't make the M3 look too bad

135I:
0-60: 4.7
1/4: 13.3

now that's nicer. the stock sti won't win. The stg2 will. I'd still go for the 335 as supposed to the 135. just because it's nicer, more value and has 4 doors. But that'd be the day I get a german car lol.

nah it's just that comparing peak bhp/tq numbers is never a good way to judge things. I don't like drag racing, but I often skip the nonsense and look at a 1/4 time. That tells me how "powerful" the car is. Then a track time to see how "fast" it is.

"low end tq" and "bhp @ xxxxrmp" are for magazine ads.
