Default Bad Day for a Young STi Owner...

Hey All,

New to the forum, but I had to join just because I'm sure some of you out there have probably felt my pain (and i need to vent...).

So, merging onto the interstate today and shift out of 3rd to find I have no gear box left...well, no clutch to engage the gear box to be precise. Car is only 15 months old and I just went in yesterday to get the 15k service. I baby my car way to much, especially since I dropped the cash to get an STi (college graduation present to myself).

Anyway, after sitting on the shoulder of the interstate for over an hour, the tow truck finally arrives to carry my car to the dealership. I arrive, sign the paper work, ask for my rental car so I can head to work (it's about 11 am now, so 2.5 hours have gone by). Come to find out, I can't have a rental car because I don't turn 25 for 6 more months.

Now I understand (though don't agree) w/ this policy, but the dealership had no problem at all accepting that $35,000 check a few months ago when I walked through the door. The people were extremely nice, the situation just sucked. After talking with a few of the personnel who worked there, we finally came to a compromise that my mother could drive the loaner and I could drive her car.

All sounds good, right? NOT - She drives a bright freaking red VW beetle. What a crappy day...

Anyway - hope to post more, I've enjoyed reading the posts on here so far.

Yes, some states do not allow age discrimination by insurance. The reason why people under 24 can't rent in many states is because insurance companies will not cover them. In states like NY that make such practices illegal this is not a problem.

Will like to hear the dealers diagnosis.
Stock STI clutch assemblies are very durable, especially with stockish power levels.

So the dealer is going to fix it free of charge right???

I'm like you, I baby mine like an old grandma, hope that doesn't happen to me.

Good luck with your situation and let us know what happens.

I'm supposed to find out tomorrow at noon what the diagnosis is. I'm guessing it's not actually the clutch b/c it went out instantly. I'm not as familiar w/ hydraulic clutches as I am w/ cables, but hopefully it's some actuator or the pressure plate that's just out of whack.

My last car (mustang gt) had 110,000 mile on it before I traded it in...still on factory clutch, pumps, alt, everything...the only thing I replaced was tires, oil, brakes and the rear axle bearings (at 95k).

In hindsight, I shoulda b*tched more...
