Weird grinding sounds randomly on cold start ups..

This first started happening about a month ago, when I was starting my car early afternoon to go to work. I had the clutch fully depressed and when I went to turn the key, I would get this loud grinding type of sound. Sounds similar to a gear being forced halfway and letting out of the clutch. I stopped and put the key back to off and let off the clutch and tried again and it started it up fine. Well, flashback to today it did it again! I parked my car and let it sit for a good 4-5hrs and when I went to start it up the same noise came back. The clutch was touching the floor and the shifter was in neutral! I have no idea what this is? Has anyone else had this type of sound on cold start ups? So far this only happened to me twice. It almost sounds like trying to start the car up when its already started type of sound (I only did this once in my integra because I thought I killed the car

). Any input would greatly be appreciated.

Yeah, could be.. I think I'll take it to Subaru if it happens again. It's just weird how it only happens like once a month so far..

hey sorry to bring this one back, but my car does it too
I never brought it to the dealer because it is not constant and therefore i cannot show them the problem. I guess the only way for them to see would be to take off the starter, but if that is not the problem what else could it be?

im guessing the flywheel might be out of alignment or something like that.. or maybe a bad starter

i had the same exact problem happened to me three times already...
anybody figure out what's wrong?

me too, i didnt want to take it to dealer because i know they gonna tell me they cannot duplicate the problem

If your car is under warranty, your dealer owes it to you to fix any potential problem that falls under the warranty. Bring it in. They tell you they cant replicate it, then tell them you aren't making stuff up and it needs fixing. Gently insist on satisfaction, then demand it if necessary.

3rd That, I just heard the same exact thing last week. Started up my car, grinding noise, car starts up, grinding noise fades away. Immediately I turned off the car for a second or two, started it back up, it seemed ok. I haven't gotten it since then, it doesn't sound normal, and it actually scared me a bit, hearing it on my car.

The same thing happened to me in my old RSX-S. Especially when it was cold out, and it would only grind for a few seconds. When I sold the car, the guy took it to a mechanic and he told me that the mechanic said it was in perfect condition. So I don't know what is wrong or how to fix it, but being that the mechanic didn't say anything about whatever it is, it can't be very crucial. Either way, I would still take it to Subaru as soon as possible.

Even if you don't get satisfaction, you establish a complaint. If, somewhere down the road, something in the car gives, you have a history and can demand repair.

I have it happen to me a few times......The grinding noise sounds like you are trying to start the car as if its already started......I was wondering about it as well.....I have been able to replicate it........turn the ignition on, but dont start the car.....wait a few seconds and then start the car.........Thats when I get the noise.

I've gotten it twice since I've had my car and both times i had it in gear and started it with the clutch down. It's never happened without the car in gear. Also when this was happening I believe my car was a little low on transmission fluid (stupid Subaru dealer

).

It happens to me everyone once in a while, only when its cold outside. It only lasts for a few seconds but it would be nice to know what it is.
