IWSTI Addict since: Feb 2008 | My son and I just installed the racing spec street/track coilovers on his '06 STi. I have a few questions about setup since we completed the job today. FYI, he races his car as a novice with the Denver area SCCA competing in the STU class. He's very competitive with the stock car in a class that is full of modified cars. He only needs to improve about 2-2.5 sec to compete for first place. The first problem we had was a tire clearance issue where inside of stock tires was touching the lower spring perches on the rear of the car. We had installed the Ingalls eccentric camber bolt in upper hole of upright to gain more negative camber but we mis-understood the installation instructions and we realized that we had the bolt rotated in opposite direction which increased the negative camber. This reduced the tire clearance causing the tire to touch the spring perch. So we rotated the bolt to correct position for positive camber. We gained about a 1/4" of clearance so we went ahead and installed a second eccentric bolt in lower hole. This gave us about 1/2" of clearance now with 1 deg of postive camber. The BC struts do come with camber plates for the front and rear so I need to go back outside in the 105 deg heat, lol, and adjust the camber plates and see if we can get about 1- 1.5 deg negative camber for street driving. I am not sure exactly how much we lowered the car but rear wheel well measurement is about the same as stock. We could simply raise the right height so that tires clear the spring perch but that defeats the purpose of running coilovers. We want to run the car lower to reduce the cg, body roll, increase camber, etc, so that car will handle and steer better for track use, specifically, autoxing at this time. My son uses the Kosei 17x9 K1TS rims for racing and he doesnt remember the offset. Wheels are back in CO. At this moment we aren't sure if this rim will clear the spring perch with 245 tires. I guess we could install a shorter spring to raise the spring perch but we would like to avoid going to this trouble at the moment but this may be the best alternative if he has clearance problems with the Kosei rims. Looks the the BC struts use a standard size 2.5 ID racing spring. Has anyone else run into fitment problems with coilover conversions? Are the adjustable camber bolts strong enough and will they stay in position? The lower bolts were a PTA to install because of small amount of clearance for wrench. Should we consider changing out the lug bolts and using some wheel spacers? Thanks, JP Last edited by jdp530; 07-04-2009 at 01:52 PM.. Reason: add |
