I would run the factory filter and go with German Castrol if you have a autozone near you. It costs about the same as other off the shelf synthetics. If not available near you go with Amsoil. My first sti hated Mobil 1, burned through about a quart every 3000 miles. Most sti dont like it. I just dont have enough miles on my new car to go synthetic yet.

If you are concerned about the boost creep issues just go stage 1. At least you will be getting rid of that junk tune that came on our '07s from the factory. My guess is catted or not you wont pass emissions with the new turbo setup. The way I understand it Colorado is vey strict. I am lucky we have no emission testing.

I'm curious if anyone has any info related big turbo - different state's emissions laws... or if its possible to pass emissions w/ a bigger turbo?.... i think i read somewhere that its possible, you just have to get a tune for it,... like running wastegate pressure or something and getting tuned to pass?.... any info appreciated...

Also picked up my KN filter from the local dealership just now.... gonna wait till tomorrow to get the oil since theres still suggestions floating around... i have heard people saying royal purple, amsoil, and mobil 1....
Dealership also carries the Accessport so i might get one of those for saturday.... im still kinda worried about what happened to my WRX w/ the accessport, but i'd definitely like to give Cobb another shot....

(uninstalling AP from my WRX resulted in getting the car flat bedded to the dealer, yanking the ECU, shipping AP and ECU to Cobb to get fixed ... it froze the ECU during un-install and it was basically a huge mess cause it was the night before i was supposed to trade it in lol.....)

Ben,

Have to been to awdpirates.net? (The local Colorado Subaru forum)

If not I would advise you do so and ask around. All of the vendors mentioned above plus more post there so you can get contact info as well as ask for direct feedback from the locals.

There are quite a few registered protuners in CO if I remember correctly...

im registered on AWDpirates, but dont talk hardly at all..... i saw alot of good feedback about harvey on there but when i brought the info here it didn't receive good feedback.... it got the same treatment from a friend of mine....
Either way, im probably just going to wait to get a tune until after the turbo upgrade....

all the laws for colorado are posted online. i would suggest searching on their site. Colorado Smog Checks - Emissions Regulations, CO Smog Testing Stations - DMV.ORG or something.

I know in Ohio, if you fail the free test. you have to spend 300 in parts alone trying to "fix" the problem. my buddy took his vr4 in and it failed (catless) so he bought new spark plugs pistons etc and swapped turbos and they gave him a waiver.
yes, you can pass emissions with bigger turbo etc. with a cat. i would also rrecommend running race fuel (just for the test) you can even have it tuned for 93 or whatever, and run it low.. then put like 2 gallons race fuel in (becuase it burns cleaner). and this usually helps it pass.
i say worry about that later

Same, and that link didnt really mention anything about what you can and cant do, just laid out the what year models need what test and such. Thanks for the link though i learned a little from reading through it.... I got 4 years (2011) till i gotta get my emissions done...

As of right now as well... i might be flip-flopping.... i'm going to try to get in touch w/ Revolution Performance's tuner and chat him up.... they have a good, informative website, and from what i can guess/assume/tell they have a GREAT tuning program going on w/ the accessport... they also "claim" to have tuned the fastest STi in colorado.... ~500whp (i dont remember exactly) 04 STi that ran a 10 sec 1/4 at 4800ft above sea level....they look very reputable and if i get some good info / numbers, and i feel more comfortable with them than i did talking to Harvey..... i'll be re-re-considering getting tuned for stage 2. Giving me more time to gather parts and do the turbo properly... i wouldnt mind the 2 hour drive down since i havent been to the springs in prolly 3 or 4 years, and i could make it into a relaxing weekend / day or so.....
EDIT: im an idiot
