Oh and a clock option would be nice for those that don't want to lose the clock. Good Luck.
When all is said and done it probably won't be much like the GTR onboard display or an HKS CAMP type thing (although that would be nice). To build one of these I'd probably use:
-a mini itx board + ram, etc ($120)
-a headrest size LCD ($75)
-phidgets sensors or the same chip i'm using right now (at least $70)
-ELMScan to get data off the OBD II port ($$)
-linux
-etc.

At this point it becomes cost prohibitive and becomes an in-car computer.

It may become a business venture...but if it does it will be a somewhat limited one (at least from the outset) and will focus on custom individualized configurations.

I have the ability to make several variants with the following as features/choices (again I'm not a vendor but will probably become one after I am satisfied with testing...right now this is still a personal project that may or may not make it to market)
-color of screen (blue, green, red)
-startup message (done, tested, customizable by user)
-computer independent datalogging (maybe...but is cost prohibitive)
-USB datalogging (done, need to find a quick way to parse raw data (MS EXCEL??))
-accelerometer (done/testing)
-boost controlled/temp controlled ic spray (might buy parts soon/still researching)
-clock (maybe, but probably not because it'll complicate the interface/cost too much to keep time with battery, etc. The stock clock costs $55 for a reason.)
-simple lap timer (easy/might buy parts with ic spray parts)
-dish washer (possible but cost prohibitive)

I'm also toying with the idea of mounting some of the controls (like the mode and stopwatch buttons) on my steering wheel....not sure though. I keep growing this project and at some point it has to stop.

what about boost referenced road head?

the clock would be nice, but it is not worth much money to me. i have my cell phone with me 99% of the time anyway.

as for the back lighting, i think it sould always be on, but maybe dim witht he headlight switch. but, isn't that making it unnecessarily complicated? i'd much rather it be an easy install with as few wires tapped/cut as possible.

Clock dimming is apparently much easier than I thought. I think I'll do it soon.

For those who wanted to know what a skyline r34 display looks like check this out: http://articles.motortoday.com/testd..._display-1.jpg

In addition I am starting to look into using standard pressure and temp sensors to get oil temp and pressure.

Thumbs up Re: the sti robot and his project accelerometer/thermometer/boost/kitech sink thread

Cool idea. It would be nice if you hooked it to your speedo, and after you ran an autocross, and logged all the data, use the coodinates from speed and g-force to draw an overhead line drawing of your travel. That would be slick.

If you use the wii sensor, this thread should definitely be sent to engadget.com.

I've got to contact an admin about this poll thing.

Right now the following modes look like they will stick:
1) Accelerometer (with new features to be added...)
2) 2 or 4 lap stopwatch/lap timer (remotely controlled at my fingertips of course)
3) temperatures (I've looked into this and stuff < 1004 F is cheap above that is about double. So intake, intercooler, underhood, ambient, tire, etc are fine, but EGT's are not. Oil and water temps require me hacking a sending unit which is also something I'm considering.)
4) Boost (Actually relatively simple using a device similar to the one in wolfplayer's autospray setup. Except this doesn't operate a switch but reports back a voltage based on the pressure. Would have peaks/discrete #'s/and a bar graph)

Hooking into the speedo would be cool if i was datalogging. I don't have plans to do any onboard datalogging at the moment. Right now its to a USB host (computer, pda, etc.).

(BTW...I though of using a PDA as a serial data gatherer/logger last night while at a local meet talking to meridock.)

EDIT: Hooking to the speedo is not necessary. Why? Integrate over acceleration and you get...speed.

http://www.ftdichip.com/FTDrivers.htm

FTDI drivers exist for Windows CE 4.2 and higher.

In theory this means if you have a Windows CE 4.2-5 pda with usb host controller (most should have this) you should be able to use it for data logging. So if you can plug in a usb key to your smartphone/pda you can probably log on it.

I think windows cd 2003 second edition is when they started using Windows ce 4.2 under the hood.

I vote all choices - what you're basically offering is a replacement for the gauges most folks buy. If the setup looks decent and is accurate, it's an excellent alternative to those setups.
