IWSTI Addict since: Feb 2007 | Makin nice progress! Brings me back to the days (and nights...) in the EE labs. A friend of mine made a wireless accelerometer. We hooked it up to my "modded" Xmod R/C car (those were the days...) and tore it through the halls. It logged all kinds of neat things like current speed, instantaneous acceleration, lateral g's, etc. |

IWSTI Addict since: Sep 2005 | I'm going out today to get a fuse and some other small bits and then it'll be installable in the car. After looking over the spec again it'll power of off the 12V from the car...so I could plug it in where the clock is if I really wanted to...and I might. W00T! |

IWSTI Addict since: Sep 2005 | set it up temporarily in a plastic box on my dash and just took it for a road test. It works better than I thought. I took a video but it sucked so I'll have to try again with someone holding the camera and without a bunch of rain. I'm probably going to install it in place of the clock this weekend pictures of the ghetto fab i did to test it out. Everything held together by double sided sticky tape. I've also been thinking about using a vertical line or a dot or something to keep track of peaks. Not sure though. Thoughts? Last edited by sti robot; 04-11-2007 at 07:29 PM.. |

Lookin' good! I like the line idea. Maybe treat it like stereo's do, where it leaves the peak bar for X amount of time, while still updating the display. (Hope that makes sense) Would it be possible to do all three axises (wrong word) of g force? X, Y & Z? This won;t show true g-force b/c when turning the car leans and will do some bit of all axises of force... Maybe you could write a formula to add all 3 up and display 1 general force. for example: -1 X (turning right), .25 Y (accelerating) & 1.25 Z (peaking a hill) = Force Not sure how that would work, but you may have an idea. | |

IWSTI Addict since: Sep 2005 | Sure, the temporary peak hold is something called a VU meter on stereos I think. Adding that wouldn't be to difficult at all. I think I'll try it out. Adding a 3rd axis is easy as they make 3 axis accelerometers. Not sure if the calculations would always work though. I think the correct way to correct for roll would be a gyroscope (more $ of course). Once I get the video up you'll see how little little lean will change the reading. Also, you'll see how bumps make for an instantaneous change in the reading due to sudden g-forces. |

| STI Master Feedback Score: 6 reviews | How about fabbing up an artificial horizon and vertical speed indicator so I can tell if my car is rolling over in the dark or if I have driven off a cliff? J/k, it's looking pretty good so far, though the bump thing would probably make it useless in the streets around me. |

IWSTI Addict since: Sep 2005 | It doesn't make it useless. It just takes readings from all accelerations. So if you tilt it at an angle rapidly (say a big pothole) it'll make a single quick reading. I could give you an artificial horizon if you really wanted...but those are for airplanes and rock crawlers |

IWSTI Addict since: Sep 2005 | Short update. -Zeroing of the accelerometer works. So if you have it tilted a little where you mount it, it should start out at zero for readings. Works for both x an y axies. -Peak meter works. I'm currently using the same bar for the peak. I was going to us "|" but its a special character used by the serial controller to control the backlight. The peak bar decays after time and the pos and neg peaks decay separately. |
