So another 2004 WRB STi popped up with only 49k miles stock and original owner

I offered 17k and he accepted the offer, the car was shown by the owners son, as he said his dad has cancer and is unable to show the car. he did say his dad would sign the title over though. Prefers cashiers check.

Things i saw probably needed replacing when i looked at it:

-Breaks where worn and rotors had a noticeable lip around the edge, as well as being rough, guessing they will need replacing?

-Rear bumper had some damage and there was a slight gap on the sides, he said his dad got hit by a truck at slow speeds

-Never had timing belt replaced

-Coolant looked dirty, kind of a darkish color almost brown. i know these are prone to bad head gaskets, could this be a sign its bad?

I would like to have the car looked at, but the son works until 6 pm and i think dealerships close by then, and i leave on Friday for 3 days. The only time we have to meet is like 12:00 pm to 1 pm.

Should i risk buying the car without inspection. afraid it might be gone by the time i get back. Of course i would want to see his dad sign the title, as well as see his drivers license to make sure i'm not getting scammed.

The Silver Sti i originally brought up is still on the table, but the guy isn't able to sell it until next Wednesday. I feel like the WRB Sti is a better deal, especially with only 49k miles.

I personally wouldn't buy it without having a trusted mechanic check it out. If you can't make the time deadline work then pass on it and another will come up soon enough.

Probably best to have a mechanical inspection, sounds like maintenance was possibly neglected.

Pay a mechanic to do it. Have the car dropped off by the owner. They doesn't have to wait for it.
Compression and leak-down. Change the oil and inspect.

It's an old car. Expect it to need some work. 17K isn't completely unreasonable price these days.

STI rotor will have humongous ridges before they are shot and while replacement can be troublesome brakes don't have to be expensive if you don't want them to be.

Tiiming belt - never needed it mileage wise - but it's old enough to want to do it anyway.

I do have 2 hesitations:

1) Do you believe the father was the actual driver? If he was really showing it the perhaps yes. When I bought my STI the ad said woman owned. It was. I wasn't convinced she was the driver though. The male who drove the car with me said they were selling it cause he was getting an EVO . . .

2) I'd want an 05-07

Bought the 04 WRB today, only 49k miles and payed 17k. i took it in and got it inspected and everything checked out good. breaks don't need to be replaced yet, The mechanic said it looked like it had been sitting for a while, and that's why the breaks where making some noise. Matches up with what the son said, his dad was going through chemo and has been unable to drive for a while.

Also came with brand new Blizak Winter tires on some aftermarket rims, as well as the stock gold bbs with summer tires.

Would have preferred an 05 but there aren't any low mileage ones around here for sale.

ill post some pictures when i get the chance.

Awesome man, sounds like a good deal for a low mileage and unmolested STi. I have the matching twin to yours, albeit with 90k miles though. I think the '04 is the best and probably the most collectible. It's a true drivers car, no extras no cushy heated seats or Bluetooth or any of that luxury stuff. It's a raw and right down to the bone performance car. I think any of the later ones just don't have that appeal to them. Anyways congrats on the purchase and looking forward to the pics. 👍

Good deal! Keep it under 100,000 miles over the next 5 years and it won't loose value, any of the GD's in this condition and with a clean history are gaining value now.

Congratulations on the purchase!

I am currently at 361,000 miles on my 2004 STi! Block was rebuilt at 333k. Yes, that's right -- original owner, never modded until after the rebuild. DD all the way. And yes, I've kept the speed above 100 mph for an hour at times, and have hit the 140's for speed. Original tranny. Just consistent maintenance, and check the oil almost every time I drive it. Check coolant levels, too!
