Default PS3 help needed...

We'll I guess any online gamer will be able to answer this.. I just bought a PS3 and need to know what I need to get online. Here is my current set-up... I have a cable modem thru Comcast. The modem is by the TV and where the PS3 will go.. I have no wireless router or any router for that matter.. The modem only has one port thats not in use, and I've been told its firewire(triangle looking, with a raised square in the middle). The PS3 comes with an ethernet cable... I'd rather not go wireless if I don't have to, since everything is right there together... but if it makes more sense or is easier I'm not against it. So basically, I need to know what items I'll need, best brands at the best price etc... oh how the set up will go... modem to router to ps3 type info... Thx!

Looks good, will I need any other cables? The PS3 came with an ethernet cable, but its short... would the router go near my pc or the PS3(where the tv/modem/cable outlet is)...

The router usually goes right by the modem but you can run cable anywhere to the router from the modem. You can get the cable online I actually hardwired my parents house, I think it was about $1 per foot, I used 100

Kylipso, thats the issue(very helpfull pics, btw), my Comcast cable modem must be old or something... there is only port for the screw-on cable wire from the wall and what I'm told is a firewire port(rectangle with angled sides, raised white middle). No ethernet connection, so.. if I did get a wireless router, it wouldnt have anywhere to go Forgive me, I'm not great with electronics...
