Im new on this forum and I dont own an STI I just really like them. I have just been wondering as I have been browsing through the fastest times section of the forum I have noticed that with similar moded cars some one might be running like 1 second or more faster 1/4 mile time. My question to you guys is are these cars really dependent on a good driver more so than lets say a rear wheel drive car or front wheel drive car.

with any car practice makes perfect.

i've seen lots of stage 2 guys at irwindale (1/8) mile dragstrip who couldn't do faster than 9.0 1/8's, while I was doing 8.2's at a lower mph with less mods.

I would say a lot more people have trouble learning how to launch a AWD car. And the launch really effects how fast these cars go in the 1/4 mile.

Yeah it seems like a common thing on this forum. So would you guys say its even that much harder launching on the street or does it not matter track or street once you learned to launch well your done?

I think generally the owners of Subaru'sare coming into these cars with little to no experience driving anything before with any real power (most would say the STi is their first performance car). That is why you see EVOs constantly out performing STi's (with similar power) b/c most EVO guys are just grown up ex DSM owners/racers.

That has always been my opinion b/c you do see lots of really F'n slow stage 2 times coming out of people who dont even know what they are doing at the track while a completely stock STi is capable of pretty easily running faster than 13.5 and even 12s with a really good driver.

I've personally always felt its much harder to learn to launch the car at the drag strip then on the street. My one friend is a prime example of this, on the street he just dumps the clutch and the tires spin netting a decent launch. He takes this same technique to the drag strip and its bog city/broken drivetrain parts. The added traction at the drag strip makes you have to learn how to slip the clutch to keep the motor from bogging.

always better to learn at the dragstrip.

At the strip your times are measured within thousands of a second. You can tell what works and what didn't, you can play around with shift points and see the effect on ET and mph and find the sweet spot for your car.

spinning tires generally = bad launch when recorded on a dragstrip, as a previous poster said you need to learn to slip the clutch properly to get the best 60'.

^^Yeah, but you want to break the tires loose a little to relieve some stress off of your drivetrain components.

thats what "learning" to slipp the clutch is for. The clutch takes the abuse. If you just dump the clutch and spin the tires, you have a far greater chance of breaking something than if you learn to slip the clutch.

yea, Illusive is right, learning how to slip the clutch at the drag strip is a better way to learn then doing it on an open road on the street, the track will be preped giving you more traction, which also means you'll bog. now im not the best driver out there i got a 07sti and my brother inlaw has an 03 evo with about the same mods as me and i have to admit launching his evo is easier for me. but as the saying goes practice makes perfect, (or broken parts)

After trying the "strip" I relized its definatly not for me. Going straight, WOW so exciting. It's just to much beating on the car in to short of a time period. road racing is where its at, and the sti is more suited for it. my $00.02

drag racing isn't enjoyable for everyone

The ironic thing is most road racing tracks have straight lines in them

Yeah, but theres a turn at the end of the straight. There's just more variables, which makes it more enjoyable for myself. I just think I'm not using my car to its full extent on the strip. A road couse driver can do the strip, but a strip driver cant do the road course. I personaly think both take extensive skill to do right, but the sti is more geared towards turns. We wouldnt have 3 diffs and awd if our cars were meant to go straight..
