Default first time at track...EVER..06 sti

I have an 06 sti with catless dp and injen cai. I got tuned a week ago and final numbers on mustang dyno where 325wtq 290whp. I need somebody to kind of analyze those numbers with the track times and tell me if its average or if im doing something wrong. First and foremost i SUCK at teh launch. I was launching at 4k and trying to feather the clutch but bogged every fkn time. On with the times

1st run-

60' - 2.175

1/8 - 8.863

1/4 - 13.645 @ 102.09

that run sucked i bogged HARD off the line....

2nd run-

60' - 1.962

1/8 - 8.582

1/4 - 13.465 @ 92.26!!!!!!

This run had low 13's written all over it..........UNTIL I MISSED 5TH!!! Launch felt decent...i was pissed.

3rd and last run-

60' - 2.045

1/8 - 8.689

1/4 - 13.461 @ 102.59

Overall i wasnt very happy. I was hoping for 13.2. Although it was my first time ever launching the sti and racing at a track. All 3 runs i revved to 4k and tried to feather the clutch. Should i launch higher? I read somewhere to launch at 6k and pretty much just let the clutch out and feather a little bit. I dont know. I really need to get the 60' times down though. I should be cutting atleast 1.9's or 1.8's. DCCD was set to auto...dont know if that contributes to anything. comments or suggestions welcome. thx

edit: also noticed that having to shift to 5th sucks...

You'll get better with more practice...

btw I used to launch at a higher rpm (about 5.5 - 6k)

you need a better launch, 1.6- 1.7 60' and if your making 290 whp on a mustang dyno, that would be over 300 whp on most other dynos... so your trap speed seems low for that kinda power. you should be trapping over 105 mph and running high 12's. But i could be wrong? just my opinion.

So if i nailed a perfect launch seeing as that im squeezing out 13.4's @102 with over 2.0 60', is it possible to hit a 12.9 @ 105+? Id have to shave 3 to 4 tenths off the 60' and gain 5 in the 1/4. Having to shift into 5th at the end of the run totally kills it in my opinion. I was also shifting around 6800-7k. Should i shift more soon?...say around 65? thx!

I seriously need to practice the launch though. I could tell i was coming out of the hole like a turtle.

With your power you should be able to hit mid to high 12's. I have ran high 12's on my off the shelf stage 2 map and so have quite a few other people. Keep on practicing, and really get your 60' down and your shifting also makes a huge diffrence.

i recently found out that a lot of local sti's that are modded have difficulty putting down good numbers in the 1/4 mile here in las vegas. I guess it has something to do with the track?...dunno. i think ive got the launch down and next time im gonna redline 1-2 and shift around 6k-6500 rpm into 3-4-5. see if that helps raise the traps a little bit.

for the launch practice makes perfect. Id try and go up another 1000rpms if your bogging. 5000rpms seems to be the right spot for me. Id say for 2nd ive always had better luck shifting 6300-6500. First gear just goes to fast to even worry about. But just mess around with it if you've got plenty of runs to take. You'll find your own sweet spot.

You launch is kinda slow but you should be still getting higher trap speeds regardless. Try shifting quicker. Dont make the "H" patern when you go to 3rd from 2nd and 5th from 4th
From second gear bang it straight into 3rd gear with a diagonal line(no zig)
Do the same fro the shift from 4th to 5th(straight line jam)

Bring your car to at least 5,000to 5500 at launch .....get a bit of wheel spin....be aggresive...but dont dump it.

shift all gears at 6,800 to 7,000 till you get a bit faster then you can find your cars sweet shifting spot after.

BTW I dynoed on Buschurs Mustang dyno at 291hp and 340 tq and ran a 12.31 the next day

YOU CAN DO IT

im running cobb OTS stg 2 map (+air filter) made me too lean. i ran at best a 13.17 with a 1.7ish 60' time... next time i go i will have a protune.. I launch around 5500 with AUTO DCCD, this with a slip of the clutch brings me right into powerband for torque (4800ish). Ive had decent luck with this. hopefully, when i get the car back on the road (in storage for winter) ill be in the 12's

Thats not a good driver skills, you should be able to do the zig zag. It will wear your shifter out, and once your tranny wears out you wont be able to "RIDE THE RAILS", you will just hit the wall and bonce off it and get no gear. Most of you "RAIL RIDERS" have probably already experienced hitting the wall. I am right? ZIG ZAG, its not that hard. It will save you lots of missed shifts, and wear and tear on your shifter/tranny. just my two cents.

lol...ya we aren't talking about saving our transmissions, we are talking about the fastest way to get the job done.

and as far as your "not good driver skills" comment that is BS

not really....your shifter should go into 3rd from 2nd by just pushing up...they are designed this way to keep you out of first. so long as you know what your doing your not going to do any damage. You will get tons more wear from launching at 5k regularly, but he seems fine with that. "good driver skills" are doing this correctly without damage, not granny shifting.

I came from a turd 93' Firehawk 6-spd that didnt self centerize, so if you didnt zig zag it you would just miss 3rd and get the wall in between 1st and 3rd. Pushing it up would just make it go back into 1st. I had to get very precise when shifting in order to powershift. And now that I have a nice car know how to shift properly makes it so easy, I never miss anymore. Good driver skills will go along way, and won't wear the transmission out as bad.

You have a 12 second machine if driven right..get the 60 ft down as low as you can and launching higher will keep u from bogging...that right there is killing your time. Also the map that your on..will it allow you to flat floor shift?
