I bought my STI in Dec. 05 and it is my very first manual car -driven automatics most my life. The salesman who sold me the car drove it to my house and gave me a 1 hour crash course on how to drive a stick. And also i became a member of this forum and posted and everyone chipped in and gave their advice and tips on driving. I reseached on driving a MT AWD and found this FAQ on NASIOC

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hreadid=587096.

I hope this helps a bit. It helped me a lot

I learned the basics for for stick a few years ago on a couple of old beater trucks and was terrible at it. It wasnt until my roommate picked up an 03 Civic and let me take it out a couple of times to practice did i get smoother with it. The basic principle still applies to the STi as other cars, but the clutch is really grabby and enguages sooner than any other car I have driven and I am still working on perfecting the hill take off at lights. In time you will always get used to a car, but take everyone elses advice and dont learn stick on the STi. You dont want to ruin something you spent so much time and money to get.

I learned on an 88 cheyenne when I was inbetween cars. Learning stick shift on a truck is the best, because if you can master shifting in those monsters, sports cars are cake!

Cool

I came across this exact problem a few years ago. I wanted to buy a manual WRX (before the STIs were out) and wanted to test drive it first, but I had very few hours behind the wheel of a standard. I looked all around for a rental company, and found that in Canada (as far as I could find) rentals are all autos now. Instead, I paid for a 1 hour road lesson through AMA on driving stick, and got enough advice in the right direction to be fairly smooth in the AMA provided Honda Civic. Next was a trip to the economy class dealerships in the city. I test drove all the low end manuals I could find, since the dealers were more likely to let me take the cars out by myself. Each time, I'd take the car out for 1/2 hr or so and just practise in a nearby residential zone. Moreover, the economy class cars always have less power so it was more forgiving when I made shifting mistakes or timed the clutch poorly.

When I finally bought my stick shift, it came easily to me. Hope that helps.

I learned how to drive stick in my STi.. I wish I had been able to find a manual car to learn on first but I had no one who wanted to let me.

I had a mental block when trying to learn to drive stick. After multiple tries over many years i finally had the door opened when someone finally made a simple observation and explained it to me:

Let the clutch out real slow and forget the gas pedal. The car will start to move without you pressing the gas...

The 1-2 shift is the *****.
