Default Two questions about STIs

1) Is the STI an ok first manual car? I have driven manual before but on cars making 100hp, nothing this powerful and the transmissions were old already, I do not have to learn how to drive manual but I sure as hell will need to get used to it, is the STI 6-speed forgiving? or even smooth? also how is the clutch on a NEW STI, I once drove a truck that the clutch was either disengaged or fully engaged there was no rolling off the clutch or middle point it was either get moving fast or stall the motor.

2) All STIs are assembled in Japan right? so that means they come to the states by ship all ready to go? if that's the case do they come in their own individual boxes? or wrapped in layers of bubble wrap? like how do they prevent scratches on them all the way from japan?

1) I would say the sti is a fine manual car. I learned how to drive stick on mine, although it is a little less forgiving than your typical vw or whatever. I would say its pretty darn smooth too imo.
2) i think the parts are manufactured in Japan and most things are assembled, but i think final assembly might be in the US though, but don't quote me on that

the sti imo has a real nice clutch, it feels better than most. you're ok to learn on any newer car that doesnt have tranny issue really

dunno how they're protected but who cares, still need to check it before signing off as a dealer could certainly scratch it up. they are assembled in japan though at least thats what the sticker says

1) To be Successful at driving manual, in a lot of ways you just have to do it and stick with it to get the hang of it, with that said I also think the STi is a fine car to learn on...I have driven many manual cars and each has its own experience and subtle needs, like for example the STi transmission is more powerful than the average car and the 4 wheel drive give it a unique feel that I could describe as less forgiving and less smooth (only on the engine breaking coming to low speeds) than the average car but not by a whole lot.....the clutch is similar to most cars, I guess the 4 wheel drive gives it a little less of a "middle" than the average car but nothing extreme like it either goes or stalls, this also depends if your moving on flat surface, uphill, or downhill (like most cars)and like most cars you will best understand the clutch play by driving it

2) I know nothing about this

Once you start getting used to the sti then learn how to rev match and heel toe to make your daily commute extremely smooth.

Heel toe? Rev match?

Unless your daily commute is an autocross event...

The Sti has a harder then average clutch. Should be no issue, but its not your moms honda.

As for being shipped, they are "containerized" and shipped via Ocean Freighter.

The clutch is real nice. I went from not driving stick for 2 years to my STI and relearning was a breeze.

X2... I suck at shifting, but love the feel of the clutch in the STI.

Owned a 5-speed 91 Accord my senior year of high school (01-02) and drove a manual maybe twice before I started shopping for an STI. Picked up my Limited about 5 months ago.

the clutch is pretty stiff compared to most other cars. but you should be fine.

+1 on the rev matching, my downshifts are alot smoother because of it.

they come across on container ships.. sometimes in a container, sometimes not. they usually have vinyl on the hood, roof, trunk, and sometimes quarter panels.

if they are damaged in transit, the transport insurance pays for the repair. unless the damage is major, they are resold as new..

ive seen a car land at port with a bullet hole in it.. they repaired it and sold it as new.. dont ask.
