2007's have longer gears so they can run the 1/4 with 1 less shift, I believe the fastest magazine tested stock STI is 06 though and the fastest stock turbo STI is an 06. 05 is considered the best year by many people, it's very similar to the 06's except the body style. All STI's have DCCD's which is what I think your friend is talking about, 05's are more rear wheel bias compared to newer years.
