Default Why do so many STI's have new short blocks?

Hello,

I recently totaled my Trans Am in a rain storm and always enjoyed the STIs. But now that I am looking for one I find that most of them are getting new engines before 80K. What seems to be the problem with them.. Is it just bad tuning and overboosting?

Kind Regards,

Hopefully a new STI owner.

You can do a little searching on the GR Forums ('08 and '09) STi.

There's a General Forum and a 2.5 Liter Engine Forum. Both will have threads about the problems that people have had with their cars.

http://www.iwsti.com/forums/gr-general/

http://www.iwsti.com/forums/2-5-lite...factory-motor/

It would be a gross over-statement to say that "most" owners have had problems as most owners have not. But there have been a few that have had engine failures. Too many for it to be rare, but not so many for anyone to consider it "most".

plus a lot of people mod their car to more than the stock bottom end can hold or at least the pistons.

because since 2007 the OEM ECU management is weak sauce, and Subarus quality control took a few steps down.

I think the OP was actually referring to older 04-06 models having new block's as he made the reference to cars post 80k miles having new blocks and not cars needing new blocks within the first 30k.

To the OP, you are examining a small select group of people who in most cases replaced their short block to build more reliable power. Have their been owners with blown motors? Absolutely, that's the risk you run with a high compression motor & turbo.

Also, you are going to see more posts about peoples block going. No one is going to post a thread saying, well my car is doing just fine. haha

The motors are simply weak, and tapped for power from the factory.

LS1 are bullet proof engines, and you would be stupid not to get another Firehawk Trans Am.

LS1 transmissions use a top loader shifter, that never wears out.

Subaru manuals have a linkage shifter, like FWD civics, and corollas. All those bushings wear out, and get very sloppy, quick!

Well i think i might have to change my name because I purchased a great condition 2005 STI this weekend. I cant wait to continue researching and learning everything about this car and what it can or shouldnt do..

Oh I also still have my LS1 engine and trans if anyone is interested. Made 375 whp before the wreck.

I am not just about v8 muscle either.. I am master certified mercedes tech who has owned a porsche 944 turbo, 25th T/A, ZR2 blazer, '99 T/A, '88 Isuzu pickup, '89 Supra, and still have my 99 Superhawk VTR.
Ive seen a lot of crazy engines and setups, and this boxer should be fun.

Thanks Again
