Question 2 Questions

As I stated in my prior post I'm coming from N/A American muscle and need some help. I have read all the "Stickie" posts and for that matter actually spent majority of my day on the EXTREMELY ADDICTING website!!!! I'm very excited to get my hands on an STI and start having some fun. After reading all this information I have a couple questions I need to get answered.

1. What is the purpose of a turbo timer? Is this something that in your opinion is needed with a stock turbo?

2. Everyone and their mother talks about needing gauges, especially on an 07. What type of gauges are you all using? Is there a specific brand that you feel works/looks the best?

I appreciate all of your help!

1. You don't need a turbo timer. The turbo on an STi is oil and water cooled.
2. Accurate boost gauge and accurate oil pressure gauge would be the first 2 gauges that I look into purchasing.

1. Agreed.
2. Depending on what you're doing. If leaving everything stock, you don't really NEED any additional gauges (unless you're just curious or want to look cool!). However, if you are going to start tweaking the engine, Boost gauge would be the first thing to get. Others will become more obvious once you decide what kinds of mods you will be doing.

I plan on being at least stage 2 with custom tune. That being said what would be your suggestion? I would like to have a mid to low 12 second vehicle.

The purpose of a turbo timer is to keep the engine running and therefore circulating cooling fluids through the turbo. A stock STi turbo, however, is oil and water cooled and does not require it.

Gauges are their own 11ty page discussion, really. If you're going to be at the track, there are lots of options. The only OBVIOUS one is a boost gauge. Other handy ones are Oil Pressure, Oil Temp, Fuel Pressure, and EGT. A wideband AFR gauge will also be handy if you self tune. Truth be told, you should consult a lot of the drag racers around the forum and see what they recommend.

As for brand, most consider the DEFI units to be the top of the line as far as matching the stock cluster. MadDad, STRI, and the STi Genome gauges are popular (the first two match the cluster, the last are green). On the cheap, I'd say Prosports are the bargain gauge of choice, and there's always autometer. And I'm obviously forgetting some manufacturers in each category.

i think i should have given a reason for going with boost, exhaust temp and fuel presser, all these are very helpfull and pertain to tuning. oil pressure isnt tunable and you have a handy little light on your dash if you loose your oil pressure. if your not doing some serious road racing a oil temp gauge is useless imo. my fuel pressure regulator froze up at 15,000 miles and my fp was stuck at 90 psi at idle or wot, i wonder if this is happening to other sti's that dont know it.
