Default braking question

hey guys i know this is probably a stupid question but is it ok to apply the brake when the clutch isnt in? and if so how long can i do it for? if i brake with no clutch wont it stall? im confused im pretty new to all the secrets of stick shift. also, is it ok to take my foot off the gas while driving? it feels like the engine is slowing down when i do it...is that gonna damage anything? i know i am a noob but i figured this would be a good place to ask. thank you very much in advance.

You can use the brakes whenever you want, the brake system is totally separate from the clutch system.

As far as the clutch, don't rev to 6000 and dump it, don't rest your foot on the clutch when you're not shifting, don't rest your hand on the shifter when you're not shifting.

Using the engine to slow down the car by down shifting is another good thing to do if you're not going too fast.

Pickup a book about driving a manual..........too much to tell..

If you brake without disengaging the clutch, it won't stall until you get below the idle RPM's. Just disengage the clutch at 1000 RPM while braking.
I've driven clutch vehicles since I could reach the pedals, and only a Browning 13 speed would be tougher to learn than this car.
Practice.

completely agree...ive been driving stick since before i had my license and this car still took me a day or 2 to get used to......your best bet is to get some buddies together pool your cash and go buy a clapped out beater civic thats stick and you all can learn on that...it will be much cheaper

i know what you guys are thinkin...im not THAT much of a noob. i know how to drive stick just fine...the only question that i had is if it is ok to apply the brake when my clutch is not engaged. for instance, when i drive, i always push the clutch in and then brake...i never brake without pushing the clutch in. so is it alright to brake without engaging the clutch? can i just brake without the clutch and then just rev match?

AND if i take my foot off the gas while driving, that will slow my engine down...is that ok? these are the only things im not familiar with...dont worry, i am totally capable of driving my sti. thanks guys

You can apply the brake at any time, in any gear, at any RPM over the engine's stall speed, with the clutch in or out.

Engine braking is one technique. Another is simply using the brakes. That's what they're for. Braking. Typically speaking, most people who drive predominantly on the street push both pedals in, clutch and brake, when slowing down to a stop. When you're just trying to scrub speed, these cars are fairly sensitive to throttle inputs. Letting off the gas will usually scrub speed at a satisfactory rate.

Seaches you should do:

engine braking
rev matching
downshifting
