Default New Old Codger

Greetings All:

I'm a 71 year old STI driver, with the SPT intake and exhaust added to my 06 STI. My passion is HPDE driver events. I've driven at Road America which I consider my home track, Blackhawk Farms, Gingerman, Grattan, and Mid-Ohio. Have done some track instructing but prefer driving to riding.

Replaced an 04 WRX with the 06 STI at the urging of my Subaru techs.
Smartest move I've made in years. Anyway, here's the question:

What changes should I make to move to a more neutral handling STI ?

On the WRX, I replaced the rear stabilizer bar with the STI one and loved the improvement. If I do the same on the STI, do you think that will do the trick?

Would appreciate you experienced suggestions.

You'll get a few answers here, but this is really a question for the suspension forum. I'll give you a few things, but I am by no means an expert.

Swaybars (and endlinks) are a popular upgrade. The other way to even out the car is camber. Obviously, there's a lot more to it than that, but those are good ways to reduce the plowing feeling of the car on corner entry.

There are a LOT of good threads in the Suspension forum. I think if you spend a bit of time browsing it and searching that forum, you'll come up with more than I can ever give you. Feel free to post this question there as well - but do a little searching first.

Welcome to IWSTI.

EDIT: If the "up" in your usename means Upper Peninsula, then hello from Detroit. I was at Waterford Hills this Saturday for a track day.

Def. sways, end links and then I would move to coilovers and wider stance rims and tires. Like Boondocksaint said check out the suspension section, very broad range of suggestions and much help on what you are looking into.

you are one of the few people i can't follow a "i'm an old guy" thread with, "i've got boners older than you. congratufcknlations...lol.

everything you need to know about an sti is on this site. among the regular guys, stretch is the man. for suspension vendors, myles (racecompeninerring) and clint (tic) will be very helpful.

71 and still on the track? youre my hero and i'm not blowing smoke up your ass. i'm 56 on sunday and i'm just getting started myself.

viva viagra.

Yup, I'm from Michigan's remote UP--miles from everywhere and the trees outnumber people, where the Moose and the wolves roam free, and gasoline is the most expensive in the state.

Thanks for your advice, guys. I am glad I joined this site finally.

Welcome from another "old codger" as I am 61. I thought for sure I was the oldest member of this forum. I think the sway bars and end links will go a long way toward optimum handling. Good luck and enjoy your new ride. Let your modding begin!

Put alot of miles on snowmobiles in da UP.

The wife and I thought it would be a great place to retire.

Sold the snowmachines and wish for winter to be over by February. We changed our plans.
Still love to visit.

Just when I though I was going through a midlife crisis I find a new roll model.

Welcome,
Tony

Hey Fellows:

Appreciate the advice. Do you think that just a rear sway bar of 22mm would do it?

For those of you unfamiliar with snowfall in the UP, we had over 200" this year locally--way ahead of that average of 160".

Don't snowmobile, just xc skis, also some snowshoeing, and a Kubota diesel tractor with a 5' blower to get the STI out to the highway.

You might want to get an adjustable swaybar so you can choose. I have a Whiteline 24mm adjustable (all the adjustments are for less stiffness than 24mm, which is the maximum). That way if you find that 22mm isn't enough, you can bump it up a bit. 22mm isn't too much more than stock.
