Default To all the noobs...

The thread that always seems to pop up on the noob forum is "how to make my STI faster?" I am a noob as was wondering this very same question. Yesterday I went to a track avent @ Laguna Seca and rode with an instructor is his STI. I was blown away, it stopped better, turned better and accelerated better. I asked him what he had done to car, expecting to hear a laundry list of mods, the answer: Hawk brake pads...that was it! Right then I came to the conclusion that money spent on the STI was worthless at this stage of the game for me. The only mod that will make my STI faster is....SEAT TIME!!! I know this is stated alot, but not emphasized enough. Every noob post that starts with "how to make my STI faster?" should just be answered with "seat time". Sorry for the rant, but take that $1k and spend it on track time, that will make your car much faster than any access port or TBE. Just my .02

Something also has to be said for sitting in the passenger seat, though. You don't feel nearly as much when you are holding onto the steering wheel.

I agree that professional instruction is the best investment.

Now I know this to be true from a track and auto-x point of view. But for those people (not me) who want to go faster on the, ahem, street, aren't performance mods still a good way to go?

you can do all the performance you want but if you can't get your shifts right or your launch right, you can still be slow.

this advice is by far the best I've heard on these forums, reminds me of my cart racing days, first day out i was getting passed and corning like a minivan. by the end of the season i was overtaking multiple cars in corners full throttle(i must note i only weight 115lbs. so cart was much faster and more responsive at same tune level) but experience is key in going faster, also if on a road course faster isn't always faster. slow for those turns appropriately. taking a corner to fast=not finishing at all.

That might be the question.. but I think want people really want when they ask that question is How can I make my car more powerful so that when I tap the accelerator it slams me into thele back seats makes my knuckles white from trying to hang on to the wheel for my life and gives me the rush I crave.

That's power and it might not be the fastest way around the track but it's alot of fun.

No lectures please tracking and learning to drive is also fun.

Exellent advice, as the wise man said "Learn to drive a slow car fast, and a fast car faster"

I wonder how many people are actually good enough drivers to out drive something with AWD and ~300hp? I know in stock form, this car is already way too much car for me. While it is fun to throw parts at the car and experiment, more power is probably the last thing it needs for me. It took me 2 WRX variants and tens of thousands of dollars to come to this conclusion

I completely agree with track time is the most important mod..and this mod carries from car to car. I've have 4 days of track since december, mix of infineon and laguna seca. I realized the STI is way more than what I can drive at the limits. A stock WRX is probably more than adequate. I was amazed to see an instructor with completely stock WRX haul arse beyond any of other high end sports cars i see at the track. I'm talking about z06, elise, porsche gt, m3, etc.
