That's an age-old question. Excepting the Evo X and 08 STi, for which I have little knowledge, there are some differences.

Evos are great cars. They don't have as much low end torque, but the handling is razor sharp. The crash test ratings are... sad. That's just fact.

STis have more low end torque (higher displacement engine), but aren't as fast in the quarter mile, and do not handle quite as well (although they handle very well - Evo's are just a bit better there). And Subaru safety... well, it's a tank. Also fact.

Drive both. That will make the decision a lot easier.

I bought a WRX as a starter and made it up to APstage2. I then drove my friend's stock STi, and it was still faster than my WRX. Tranny felt smoother, better tires, better brakes, everything. Get the STi.

oh, if anyone is interested in buying some of my shoes to help me get a car soon, just pm me. heres a list of what i got. jordans, bapes, iverson, super skates.
sit down and sign a written contract between the 2 of you as to repairs, damages, insurance and such wrt how the 2 of you will split the obligations and recourse of one drops the ball. family is family but money can ruin those relationships. one of you nurfs the car and refuses to fix it and the other is left with the entire obligation and no recourse. one of you doesn't make payments on the car or insurance and the other is left holding the bag for the whole amount without recourse.

the contract should clearly state what is expected of each person wrt:

car payments

insurance payments

maintenance costs (per mile in case one uses it more than the other)

repairs/deductibles for damages (both at fault (100%) and no fault/3rd party (50/50 on the deductible) damage repairs

recourse should be clear:

failure to meet the requirements stated above will resort to forfieture, by the defaulting party, of the partial ownership of the car if not resolved within 2 months. party B will get 100% ownership without additional costs incurred (other than the fees associated with title transfer) in the event that Party A goes into default.

without a written contract you can go for years trying to get a shared title into your name if one of you walks away from the deal.

Mention to your dad that I went through this with my kids. To "add value" to my "gift" to them, I "sold them" the car I was giving them (at waaay under market). Each was to pay $1500 and split the cost of insurance. We didn't bother to go into maintenance and such. My oldest started driving first. My youngest paid the whole amout with the youngest agreeing to "pay her back". 2 years later (with my oldest being the sole driver for the 1st year) and my youngest hadn't seen a dime. Very unfare. It caused a lot of family strife and I eventually sold it out from under my oldest for $1500 (the balance due my youngest - and about a quarter of what it could have gone for). I gave the $1500 to my youngest and, when my oldest pitched a fit, pointed out at least she wasn't being asked to pay interest on her 2 year loan. But it took a lot of headaches until I finally had enough and sold it. And I wouldn't claim that my oldest is a dead beat. I am very proud of how she turned out (now 27), but 16, cars, and money does strange things to kids.

it's not really any different here. if you don't find anything in the search or sticky notes, make a thread up.

try socalevo.net, its way friendlier than evom but most guys are from southern cali area but who cares.... whoever said if you get an "evo get a clutch", dont mislead this guy with incorrect information.... there is no need for a clutch unless you abuse the car and launch the **** out of it at every light.... theres plenty of VIII's and IX's running around with 50K miles still on the stock clutch, just check out socalevo if you dont believe it.... I was in the same boat as you about 2 years and went with the Evo over the Sti.... The Evo is a very fun car, handles well and makes great power with light mods, just like an sti...The IX comes with black recaros which were really nice as well, just get and MR model if you go with and evo so that you get all the extra goodies like BBS rims, HID's, and vortex generator, and 6 spd tranny.... I sold my evo 4 months ago and miss it dearly, but now i am saving up for an STI.... 3 friends of mine have STI's and finally convinced to come over to the Suby side because with the mods they have done, their cars are fast, handle well, and look great... I love the look of the 06-07 STI's and the sound of the boxer engine, and i think thats what made me want one so bad.... So in the end the choice is yours, both cars are great in different ways, and both engines are great platforms to build on, you wouldn't go wrong with either choice

Test drive them both. Months ago I test drove an 07 wrx and at the time was so excided having just learned they put the 2.5L engines in them. I thought I was going to go to the dealership and walk out of there with a car that day for sure. Sat in the wrx, started her up... Rolled down the windows... stuck my head out the window.. big confused look on my face, hey where's the throaty boxer engine sound? I couldnt even hear that she was running. Steeringwheel lacks feedback, suspension could be tighter, seats not lock-you-in-place enough. All this being said from someone that had been driving a sentra se-r spec v for the last 3 years - certainly not a powerful or loud or super good handling car, but rugged and a blast to drive. They made the wrx too luxury oriented in my opinion. After zooming around on the highway (oh, also a 5 speed transmission, zzzzzzzzzzz) I said to the salesman how disappointed I was and said mayyyyyybe the sti would be more of what I was looking for.

Surprisingly he said oh, STi huh, wanna drive one? Sure! Right from the minute I started her up it was perfect. Beastly engine sound, stiff seats, glued to the road feel. Then I saw the price So I bought a used '05 for $23k at 27k mi. Well worth it

Great to see you on here... I knew after we went crusing on the Turnpike that day you'd eventually buy one too. Just don't ever park it in Newark if you visit KXK again...
