So did they put you a new shortblock or rebuilt it? Most dealerships don't have enough skills to work on motors. They can change oil pretty goodthough.

My car was worked on my a master subaru mechanic. The SOA representative made the call not to swap the long block so the rebuild is what they decided on.

During the rebuild process this is what was replaced:

Both heads
Water pump
Oil pump
Plugs
Pistons
Bearings
Tons of misc items (gaskets, oil pickup tube......)
I'm not sure if they replaced the crank or rods.

There was no damage to the short block core. The heads had worn journal bearings, exhaust lift out of spec and other things.....thats the reason behind the brand new heads.

Prior to the rebuilb - crappy idle
After the rebuild - solid idle

Regardless your stoked the work was finished so fast. Even though I have my car back the frown on my forehead is still there from waiting as long as I did.

I spit on that loaner car they gave me.

Rebuilt or replaced, it doesn't matter. At 2.5 months, you got hosed, amigo, big time. Depending on backlog, Ron (formerly of Axis Power) has a 7-14 day turn around time for a complete longblock rebuild - and this is with a LOT of custom lower end and head work.

I'm very surprised that SOA decided to rebuild the entire longblock - at their factory direct cost, it has to be cheaper for them to just slip in a new motor. I trust they re-wrote your drivetrain warranty, yes?

To be honest, I was very surprised the dealership/SOA decided to take on the liability of rebuilding the engine instead of swapping the longblock. They know if something goes bump it's back in there hands....I told the owner if anything else happens I'm driving this lemon through her showroom floor. She was not amused to say the least.

With regards to the powertrain the 5 yr 60kmi was restarted when I got the car back.

What worked for me when I changed the spark plug was take a breaker bar and push slightly the engine against the frame when you take the coil out or put it in... it work like a charm!

That's all you can ask for at this point. OTOH, I'm fairly certain that if it were to fail again, you'd be entitled to lemon law reimbursement - one of the qualifiers is length of time out of service, and I think you have that covered.

What a bummer - sorry to hear about that.
