Default Gold heat reflective foil on IC piping?

I'm thinking about wrapping the cold side of my IC piping with gold foil to keep it cool from the engine heat. Do you guys think it's a good idea? Where can I get the gold foil? Also, would it be beneficial to wrap the CAI pipe and hotside IC pipe with the foil as well? Thanks in advance.

Thanks. I actually did a search on Nasioc and found the cheapest price here: http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/pro...p?Product=1838

chaos311clarity, can the guy you know get this stuff cheaper than what I found?

Now the question is... do I cover the cold-side IC piping only or do I cover the hot-side and intake pipe as well?

so does this mean it has an installed life of less that 1 year? i've been thinking using this stuff but not if it only lasts a year.

the price at pegasus is the standard pricing for a 12x24" section.

Hopefully in the coming months i'll have some test data for you guys to prove its effectiveness.

I just did a google search and found this: http://forums.subytech.com/showthread.php?t=86

If you read on, the poster talks about a test... I don't know if he's saying Enjuku racing did this or he did it himself, but results seem pretty damn good:

Quote:
The main purpose for this is to reduce heat from the turbo on the intercooler. I intend to do some quantitative tests on the benifits as soon as possible. At enjuku, we took a peice of thin aluminum and put the foil on one side and heated that side to 270 degrees. The other side was at 100. I believe they sell it for $50/linear foot (which is about 2 feet tall) so its not cheap, but its fun stuff.

I'm more interested in what Snorky is looking at. The life of this product. For what you pay for you'd imagine it would stay useful a little bit longer than a year.

shelf life and useful life are two different things.

my guess is the shelf life has more to do with the adhesive.

once the gold foil and adhesive cure they should last for a long while.

I'll do some endurance testing as well as temp testing.

While I did not use the gold foil (too bling for me) I did go a similar route and put a heat reflective coating on my entire IC, Y-Pipe, Turbo Heat Shield and CAI.

I have not run "scientific tests" as of yet, but I can tell you that the entire charge air path is MUCH cooler when you touch it.

I wouldn't say it was MUCH less expensive. The material I used cost about half what the gold foil costs. When you add in the Turbo blanket and CAI cover, it was on par with coating the IC with gold foil.

However, I would expect the gold foil to be more efficient in reflecting heat than the AL I have.
