Think of it as a shot of cooling race gas only when needed.

What whp/wt difference am I looking at with the FMIC versus TMIC?

Is the main benefit of a FMIC extra power or more consistent power?

Thanks.

top mounts are prone to heat soak. once this happens, power will go down. how much it goes down is hard to say. it will vary depending on your set-up. front mounts don't have this problem.

I hate to bloat this thread more, but I have another question. What would be the net gain in power from going to a FMIC and getting rid of my CAI on the setup I've listed at the top of the post?

Thanks.

Unless your planning on running super-big power, or spending loads of time doing runs down the strip (with the associated sitting around waiting for your time engine running) my personal opinion is to stick with the top mount for fast-road use. Heat soak isn't really a major problem when your moving anyhow.

The fastest road-going Impreza in the world to my knowledge (Andy Forrest Performance) is running a custom top mount - so can't be all that bad!

Yeah, I think I'm staying with the TMIC. I've been back and forth so many times over the past few days, but I think the cost just isn't going to justify the benefits for me.

Thanks again everyone for your helpful information!

One of the BEST mods I have ever done was a fmic. Even on the stock turbo. reason why? i live in the desert. I get very dry, hot hot hot weather for several months. I could drive 7 miles on the highway and not have my intercooler cool off in 95*weather. I was tired of loosing all the power from heatsoak. You could totally FEEL it. You could also DATALOG it!

When i went fmic, I didn't have a single problem after that. I was expecting to have some, but my butt dyno didn't feel it.

regarding intakes. stocker or CAI, do NOT go shortram. DO NOT GO SHORTRAM!!!!

so for me, fmic was a better mod than cobb stg2.

Yeah I'd stick with the TMIC. But really, you are missing out on a cooler intake charge. I bought my car in Vermont, drove back to new jersey, and could feel the difference for about a week. Now I'm used to these hot(compared to vermont) temperatures. This immediatly made me look for options to keep my intake charge cool....
FMIC=LOTS of moolah for a good one and works. Some people report some crazy power gains when they switched to one and even better when they got tuned.

Meth=Not as much money for a kicken system with safety cutouts and works even better than any air-air intercooler.

I honestly think people get turned off to meth because of a common misconception that it is either costly, dangerous or inconvienient. I did my research, I'm getting meth. Hell, you can tell girls that your car runs on water and stuff made from corn, too!

I've been told that in my area (Florida), people will recommend a fmic for a lot of setups. When I get re-tuned soon, I'm getting a fmic.

The turbo is in a slightly odd place in his car, but its not like that one on Youtube. Mainly because that wouldn't be road legal (not even in the UK!).

Lots of companies will say "yes! you really need a FMIC.. look, we have this nice shiney one here for only $####.## *chu-ching!*", where you won't get so many companies saying "yeah, we stock them.. but you don't need one yet".

Obviously some of you guys have climate issues to deal with that others don't.

i have a 20g with full supporting mods and the ESX top mount on my STi. It works great what it is under 75 degrees outside anything above that the intercooler gets heatsoaked SO QUICKLY. If its 90 degrees outside i only walk away from a tuned stage2. if its colder its a whole different animal. i made 300/300 on MZM's mustang heartbreaker dyno which is like 360/360 on a dynapack. i have been thinking about going front mount but you also have to remember there is like 7 feet of piping which means 7 feet of air against gravity which yields more lag and a shi*load less response down low.

Go with the Front Mount, save yourself the trouble of getting retuned later. Hear me now, believe me later.

FMIC is the "better choice" if going anything larger than stock turbo. Although I stayed with the big TMIC to keep my hood scoop functional.

On a side note, if you do stay with the big TMIC (like I did), I suggest installing a scoop insert in order to make the TMIC more efficient.
