Default Catch Can Foibles-Nearly Empty after 6k miles-YET ANOTHER POSSIBLE solution tried...

I installed Perrin Dual Catch Cans and Freddie's dual catch can plumbing 3k miles ago. I used the Perrin supplied foam media in each can. Correct connections and air flow to intake were verified at install and when i examined/disassembled them today. When installed, i pushed the filter media against the top of the can so it would... filter. After 3k miles there is about the equivalent of one drop of oil in each can.

My thoughts:

The supplied foam is very dense, maybe when i pushed the foam against the top of the can, i in effect blocked the flow of air. If so could it have damaged the emission control valves in the system?

Like i said, the supplied media is very dense and takes up nearly all of the can perhaps a smaller, less dense foam should be used. Lawnmower foam air filter?

My emission control valves worked previously as was previously verified by the copious amounts of oil sludge in my intercooler and manifold.

Any help/thoughts/experiences would be greatly appreciated.

I had/have the exact same issue here. Through much head scratching, installation double checking, and consulting the oracles here it came to pass that the stock lines and the fittings with the Perrin cans are much too small. However you have Freddies stuff (very nice) so my suspicion is that the oil comes into the can and hooks a sharp turn right back out due to there being nothing to force it through the media like a divider between the in and out. I also used the stuff that came with the Perrin can and after a while it started to fall apart into little bits in the bottom . I've tried kitchen sponges but they dry up and turn hard as rocks. I'm on the search for the Element Tuning can which looks to be the final can I'll have to buy I hope.

How big are the lines? I was using 5/8" ID lines and they were as short as I could get em... although 9/16" ID would probably be a better fit for the head breathers. The can managed to collect a good amount of oil even when vented to atmosphere.

OK, is there any oil now in your I/C or piping? If not, quit worrying and carry on. OTOH, if there is once again "copious amounts of oil sludge", then swab everything out and try running it with no element in the cans for a while.

imo it's too soon to tell. theres probably residual oil from before i installed the cans. i should clean my intercooler out, any suggestions of something to get the oil out without destroying the rubber gaskets on the y pipe?

i bought some materials to make a baffle/divider in the cans and some new foam. i'm going to try to assemble something tomorrow.

Ok so i made a divider and put a lawmower air filter in the outlet side. I made the divider half the length of the can. That way if it does actually start to fill up, the sludge will have to fill half the tank before cutting off flow. Anyone think this will work? I guess we'll see in a thousand or so miles.

Hmmm...looks like a good idea there. Post up the results.

I agree, the fittings on the Perrins are way too small. I re-drilled an re-tapped the cans so I could use larger fittings. I use lawnmower type filters in my cans.

3500 mile Update: 1 Can Empty, 1 can with a teaspoon of sludge. Another possible solution will be posted tomorrow.

Hint: Bigger lines and a heat shield
