Default Synthetic oil question

I noticed a lot of people not happy with Mobil 1 synthetic oil on here, and a lot of people recommending either Royal Purple or Castrol Syntec.
My question is why do so many of you that use Castrol Syntec use 0w-30 and not 5w-30, like what is recommended for our cars?
It says right on Castrol website that 0w-30 is ideal for very cold conditions up to -40 degrees. Why not use 5w-30 which is the recommend grade for "normal" temperatures. I don't think that many of us live in Alaska where it would get down to -40 degrees outside..

I just use 5w-30 all year round (Royal Purple)
it gets mighty cold (recorded -50 some nights this winter)

not sure why any warmer climate states would be using 0w-30? interested to find out

Check out this forum. The part I linked you to is dedicated to the 0W-30 German Castrol that a lot of people like to use (I use it too). IIRC, the viscosity comes out to be on the high side for a 30 weight, and is an all around great oil. Plus, some people have solved their oil consumtion (sp?) problems by switching to it.

BTW, the German Castrol is not the same as the US made stuff...unless they've changed the US stuff.

Hope this helps!

Also seems as though there is a German version of Castrol Syntec which is different than the regular one.. at least that's the impression I'm getting from checking out a bunch of synthetic oil related threads on here

Hopefully this gets moved into the Power + Performance forum so you can get more responses.

The "German Castrol" 0w30 is what is used mostly in Europe.

The Castrol 0w30 is a "thick" 30 weight which has had less issues with oil consumption then Mobil 1 5w30. While 5w30 is recommended 0w30, 10w30, etc will work just fine as well.

A lot of tuners have actually recommended 40 weights in cars that have had some issues with oil consumption and it's helped. I'll probably be moving up to a 5w40 on my next oil change.

While both the 0w30 Castrol and 530 Mobil 1 are both 30 weights they are actually at different ends of the 30 weight rating. The Mobil 1 is a "thin" 30 weight and is closer to a 20 weight whereas the Castrol is closer to a 40 weight.

Check out http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ and the forums on there for a TON of information about oil. I've been reading up on this since I've had some issues with my car and from running Mobil 1. I'm currently on Motul 8100 5w30 and my oil consumption has dropped significantly.

I run 5w-30 Castrol Syntec oil and have not had any issues with oil consumption. However, several oil analyses have shown that this oil does not remain at 30w but, instead, wanders close to 20w. My next oil change is soon and I will once again get an analysis and will probably move to 40w. If the 40w doesn't stay 40w then I will probably switch brands.

Thanks for the advice and info, guys.
I think I'm going to try that German Castrol 0w-30. I'm just hoping I can find it locally.

PS: Mods, feel free to move this thread if it's in the wrong section. I wasn't sure exactly where it should go. Thanks

I'm currently using Motul 300V and I'm loving it. The car runs so smooth and it was an unbelievable change coming from Mobil 1. Motul 8100 should be good enough and not as expensive as 300V. I heard that 300V is a bit of an overkill for the stock engine and 8100 is good enough. I'm just using 300V since I can get it at invoice.

I burn ZERO oil and use Mobil 1 5w-30, 3k oil changes. it helps to have the crawford performance air/oil separator.

I think I'm going to try that German Castrol 0w-30. I'm just hoping I can find it locally.
You can buy the German Castrol Syntec at any Autozone. It will be seperate from the US Castrol Syntec. You can tell it because on the bottles it will say European blend.

I have used:
Mobil1 - Burned oil
Royal Purple - Burned oil...not as bad as Mobil1
Redline - Burned oil...Not as bad as Royal Purple
Amsoil - No oil burned and runs smoother

Also, noticed slight lifter tick with all oils used after 2000+/- miles....also had track days in there as well....I have not had the car on the track since switching to Amsoil...but so far no tick.
