Mobil 1 10w-40 (I know, I know, our engines like 0w but this was before I researched, and it was what the manual said to put in my temp range)

I don't burn any oil at all, though some people do. I have a 2005 STI with 18k miles on it.

I really don't drive it hard either. Its always under 3kRPM, push it to 6k maybe twice a month??

Oil was put in at 17k, now at 18k I just checked it the other day and still looks the same as it went it! I'm just waiting for my oil testing kit to arrive.

German Castrol is nice, but I can't find any around me (Daytona Beach, FL) and Mobil 1 is cheap and easy to get at the local Wal-Mart

40w may not necessarily be a bad option. As our engines get old and wear down 40w may even be required at some point. Really it all depends on the oil pressure you're running.
