well did a little of everything today. started out tarring down the motor until i ended up rounding out the passenger side exhaust cam bolt. so then i went down and started to weld up my headers. did that for a while until i got board and went back to the tare down. had to drill out that bolt and when i got that out things when smooth. hears some pics of the day:

the tools of a master motor builder! lol!

Looking good man. Just out of curiousity how long have you spent ripping down the engine to date?

On a side note:
Either you live alone or you have the coolest wife/girlfriend ever! I swear if I pulled apart an engine in my house I'd get a foot to the ass!

Wow, nice...its gonna look really clean once all the welds are buffed up! Any plans on the drivetrain? Axles, clutch, etc? With all that power, the axles will go bye bye!

this year i will get it running and work all the kinks out. then next winter i will cage it, build the trany and diffs, drive shaft shop driveshaft and rear axles and hubs.

Ruminum is a different beast to weld, huh! Did you pressure test that IC before you installed it? Al is especially prone to porosity, but alot of times peening the spot of the leak will correct it. You definitely are a creative/motivated one.

Bro, I gotta hand it to you... Inspiration, motivation, and persperation! Good work!

I have been looking over the pics closely, and I have a coupla' three points:

1. Consider using a remote oil filter. The wastegate is awefully close to the filter. At least monitor temps and use a turbo-timer.

2. Do not use a diverter in the plenum. It is best if you let the air flow however it wants to. It will chose the best path, and that path will change over rpm ranges. To use a diverter effectively limits plenum volume for each bank, esp. at high RPM. Also, are you trying to weld an aluminum TB plate to a steel manifold? Can't tell from the pics...

3. Not ment as a criticism, but the aluminum welds don't really look up to the job. Ally is a hard material to weld, and takes time to master. I salute your efforts, but this is a pressurized application. I don't think they will hold for long. I would have a professional re-do it. Again, not a criticism. It will be a pain to tear down to fix, might as well have it done by someone with more experience. And MAKE SURE it is pressure checked.

A pointer for the exhaust welding: when welding a thin sheetmetal joint, weld only for a short distance. 1/4 to 1/2 inch at a time, allowing the material to cool. Skip around also. If you can, bolt the exhaust to the engine and put the ground clamp on the exhaust. This will keep the exhaust from distorting from the heat, and keep the current from traveling through the motor.

Good luck!

the frankenstien sti, this is a lot of work, wow. im not an expert by any means, and a seccond set of eyes, or in this case second thousand set.

1. WG spring, might be affected by the heat of the headers, cold , hot, cold. and when engin not warm.

2. i agree with dividers in the intake plenium, get rid of them.

3. hot passengers side tire, brakes, and brake lines bad news.

keep it going, good job, and thanks for the insperation.

ok ok ok... the welds on the intake are just tacks doen with a mig ( not even sopose to weld alum with it) just to hold it there. have a tig to do the rest. the intake manifold is all alum not trying to weld steel to it.lol! and yes i am keepin a little divider in there but just in the way back on the wall nothing like in the pics. will come about a inch and a half out not even half way acoss the plenum. every thing is going to be pressur tested, the welds are strong as hell and have made sure of it. and the motor and heads that im welding on is a spare block that i got from a freind that is blown so dont have to worry about wrecking it. the one in the pics is mine that is tore apart anyway to be built.

i am useing a relocation kit for the oil filter. will be mounted in the drives side fog spot along with the oil cooler.

the waste gats will be fine as far as heat goes. with every thing being coated and wraped the heat wont be a issue for any thing (bumper, waste gates ect..).

will post more pics tomarrow of the progress. and thanks for all the support.

matt
