Using conventional motor oil. Subaru fill from the dealer and Penzoil when I do it myself. No fancy synthetic here for me.

With the first part ( List of UOA's (Used Oil Analysis)- find an oil that works!) this resume all the oil sample from the beginning (14km to 50 000km mark)

Even after 50k km . it doesn't consume oil .. at least nothing noticeable.. engine noisy like usual .. like all other EJ257 i think

the next sample will be at 6000km interval (like the service manual say) just for 1 sample .. will be back on the 5000km intervals after that

Hope it's helpfull to someone!

45,200 KM - Motul 300V 5W40

49,997 KM - Motul 8100 XCESS 5w40

Okay guys I have a question here since this topic was brought back up (date)....If you want to switch oils....conventional to synthetic or vice versa....are there any cons to either of those switches.

I have heard stories concerning seals breaking down and etc. I would love to switch to a better oil if possible....I just noticed a lil oil consumption the last change...I will do an analysis soon.

you could have 2 troubles switching to synthetic

1 - oil consumption increase . (since maybe you use some thiner synth oil). normally when you change to synth in an old engine .. (with substantial miles on it)

2 - Cost if you have oil consumption... if you burn oil or leak ... remplacing it with synth will cost you more..

if your car drink a lot of oil .. stick with dyno .. since it will do nothing for you anyway (the main reason to switch to synth is extended oil change intervals)

imo it'S the toruble you can have with switching to synth ..

and i see no reason to switch back to dyno .. or maybe the cost .. this is maybe the only reason

maybe some dyno oil do some magic thing in our engine ! but personally i will not waste my time to find witch one

ho and btw ... ditch that 5w30 .... get 5w40 at LEAST i will not run 5w30 again in my engine .. that'S my opinion maybe it's different to someone else .. even at -30celcius .. i have no trouble with 5w40 .. and maybe i will run amsoil 0w40 next winter

Just got my first analysis back. I felt bad about running the oil for 9,000 miles...at least until I got the report back. I still feel weary about running over 4,000mi since everyone seems to change their oil at or around 3,000mi.

Oh, and Amsoil FTW.

^ I think I'm going to make the switch to German Castrol, the Motul 5W40 has done very well, but the cost is becoming prohibitive

I run Motul 300v 5w40 on the track. Does running a higher weight oil like that degrade you fuel economy?

doesn't mine, I get 28-30 mpg on the highway (~80 mph)- that's w/ a 2.0, my mileage is the same w/ 5W30 M1 that I run in the "winter"

it's great stuff, just starting to get over spendy- looks like the GC 0W30 is a good alternative (it's ester based as well) for less $
