Hey i have a question as to what oil i should be using. I have been getting my oil changes at Subaru since i was given 3 years free oil change. The 3 years is almost up and im looking into switching into synthetic oil. I'm willing to pay a few bucks more for the better synthetic oil. any recommendations i was actually looking into the royal purple since i hear thats the best. I live in boston, ma so it either gets really cold or really hot. I only track my car a few times a year. It would be greatly appreciated if i could get a few inputs as to what oil i should be using. Thanks

i think i will post mine !

2200km - OEM OIL

5100km - Castrol GTX 5w30

10100km - Amsoil ASL 5w30

15500km - Amsoil ASL 5w30

20700km - Amsoil ASL 5w30

25300km - Amsoil ASL 5w30

29800km - Amsoil AFL 5w40

35200km - Motul Xcess 8100 5w40

40100km - Motul 300v (racing oil) 5w40

(sorry for the long post).. btw i have 2 more oil sample to send .. 1 from another run with 300v ans 1 with 8100xcess (to get a good sample) i always use the same type of oil filter (white 6 star) from the same case, so they are from the same batch

imo . the motul 300v is the best .. but it's realy pricey .. look at the oil sample .. i will never run a oil less than a 5w40 in my engine for the reason listed.. 5w40 at minimum ! .. i found also that amsoil is a good oil . i have to try their 0w40 formula (they told me that the most advanced oil on their line) so in ±5000km i will try it!

Btw my engine take ZERO (0) oil .. even at 5000km it's about the same as when i put the oil in it .. and motul oil are a little bit prone to vaporization. so chek your oil level often (i do it when i put gaz .. so at least 1 time per week)

A few of mine:

Mobile 1 10w30 (when I first started to notice significant oil consumption)

Valvoline 5w30 (still a lot of consumption)

Motul 8100 5w30 (less consumption but still pretty bad)

Motul 8100 5w40 (even less consumption probably due to thicker oil)

The fuel in the oil concerns me a little bit since I don't sit in traffic much at all or do a lot of stop and go driving. We'll see what happens with my next analysis (Castrol GTX 10w40 which has been working nicely and much less oil loss) and fuel in the oil. I noticed WolfPlayer's recent oil analysis had some fuel in the oil in his recent sample. Since we live in the same general area I'm wondering if it's a weather/heat thing from the summer time?

I am sending in my sample of Amsoil Series 3000 Heavy Duty Diesel 5w30 this weekend. Should be interesting to see if the additional costs are worth it or not.

Hey just wondering how well will the German castrol 0w-30 work for me under New England weather. Are there any other better alternatives. I don't mind paying a few bucks more.

Take a look at my post. It is just a few posts back. I did not see any real improvement by using the GC.

dukenukem,
Did you add all of your make up oil evenly thoughout your 4500 mile run, or did it seem to need more and more make up as the miles racked up?

Looks like I'm due to update the original post again, but I just came here to share this: an interesting test done on many popular oils:
http://www.animegame.com/cars/Oil%20Tests.pdf

Valvoline, Royal Purple, and Penrite were big winners.

Unfortunately, a single Timken test does little to show you actual performance of an oil in an engine since there are many other factors which determine how an oil will reduce/limit wear in an actual engine.

That make-up oil was a typo .. i didnt have to add any oil. It should actually have been 0.

Here's mine:

07 STI Blackstone Oil Report

There are 2 reports, one using Mobile 1 and the other after I switched to Motul 5W30.

Motul 5W40 300V, 3400 miles on sample ( a couple of track days (temps at 100 F), a couple of autoxs and some long marathon drives 500+ miles)

SUS visc. @ 210F 66.3 73.1
TBN not tested
IRON 6 2
CHROMIUM 1 0
LEAD 1 0
COPPER 2 0
TIN 1 0
ALUMINUM 2 0
SILICON 9 9
BORON 27 0
SODIUM 4 2
MAGNESIUM 569 661
CALCIUM 2595 2642
BARIUM 0 0
PHOSPHORUS 1060 1153

MOLYBDENUM 83 87
NICKEL 0 0
MANGANESE 1 1
SILVER 0 0
TITANIUM 0 0
POTASSIUM 0 0

They found no fuel, antifreeze or water. Flashpoints (don't know what bearing this has on anything?) were 395 virgin, 385 sample. They also found 0.4% insolubles- which they state should be below 0.6%- don't know if this a function of the oil filter?- running oe filter BTW.
