Default Intake silencer delete, elbow reinstall

So this past weekend I removed my intake silencer box and reinstalled the stock elbow. Now my qtn is this. What is the better way to go. Leave the elbow the way it currently is with a hole in the bottom that opens to let cool air in from the fenderwell or cover the hole? Am I losing airflow by having the hole open at the bottom? Or is the hole just an extra entry point to draw air in to the airbox?
Anybody do any testing or have any thoughts on this?
Thx.

OK dark, I did this recently. First up I covered the hole and ran it. A few weeks later I decided to ditch the patch. I popped the patch out with a long screw driver via the intake side. THis is easier then coming thru the wheel well again. Also, I popped the fog lamp cover to reach up and retrieve the patch. I'm now running it with the elbow installed with the hole in the bottom and I believe this is best and here's why: The 05 fog lamp has a louver in it ducting air headon into the wheel well. This enclosed wheel well is where you would put a CAI to prevent sucking in engine heat. Soooooo, with the stock setup minus the silencer you in effect have a CAI now. Cold air is being directed into the enclosed wheel well via the fog lamp louver and thru the stock intake piece. No hot engine air is getting to your intake this way.

The sound is good too....not over bearing....just right IMHO. HP? Maybe a little....not much if any at all. Don't think you lose anything this way. Drop in a freer flowing air filter like the K&N (I've not done this yet) and you could call it a day on the intake side.

Here's some pics & discussion here.....

How to remove intake silencer?

Leave the hole.

You get the pressure from the ram scoop at highway speeds and the immediate cold air from the fender. At least that's the way 2 different tuners described it to me. I'm sure with stock turbo and stg 2 setup, we're splitting hairs here. I doubt either way would make a whole lot of difference.

Many people leave it unsealed, many people seal it up. For me? I like the hole.

Excellent. I was thinking the same thing. THe sound is pretty cool, although not overbearing. Just a little whoosh sound. I had the whole silencer and elbow assembly out for a day and the whooshing/sucking sound was a lot more noticeable. However the car didn't feel like it was running as smooth. So i reinstalled the elbow and it runs better now.
As far as replacement panel filters go. I haven't heard much if a K&N is better then the stock paper filters. So I'll probably stick with stocker for now unless I see something that proves otherwise.
Thanks for the info.

Long live the hole then :-). Your right, it's not like were running a 20G or something.
Still waiting on the Borla to get here, hopefully tomorrow or Wed. Can't wait...

I was wondering what you guys thought of the gp silencer delete elbow. Is it worth the money or is it just like taking off the silencer and leaving the hole. do they both do about the same thing?

Yeah, all the ones sold are just the same as doing it yourself. I really can't see why anyone would buy one other than if they are planning on selling it in the future and want to put the stock silencer back in. Even if you do plan to sell it later you can just put the deleted part back in and duct tape it back together with the elbow (not my recommendation, came from the huge snorkel delete thread).

And holy bumping a 2 year old thread
