Gwinnet, do you have the dyno graphs? It would be an interesting comparison of power curves between the two. Spool of FMIC vs TMIC, and the area under the curve as well. Peak numbers are nice, but we dont race with peak numbers after all. If the FMIC had a much better total area under the curve due to mid range gains the .3 improvement would bear more scrutiny.

^ i believe Scott was comparing the STi TMIC and the TXS TMIC; not a FMIC.

I know I paid a little more than $1g for the injen fmic, I wonder if this $180 piece will out perform it. If it does that I will wish I still had that $1g and I would turn it into a 20g!!!!
One thing that Ive noticed for sure with the Injen FMIC as compared to the stock TMIC; in the summer the car runs much stronger. This is just driving around. When it got hot and humid here and I had the TMIC installed, I could really tell the car wasn't happy. Now I hardly notice a difference. Granted I am running the Injen CAI which might also help alleviate the losses to heat.

I have no comparisons to aftermarket TMIC but after using this FMIC I will not be going back to a TMIC. Only other IC I am considering is the CBRD Q Mount, if and when it comes out.

My 20G is about 90% installed and my injectors are here, so Im getting ready for a tune. I will definately update with the results when I have them.

The TMIC's may have nearly the same length, but the air moving through them will be going much slower, so it still has much more time to cool. It will be going slower because the core is thicker and thus the air has a far greater area through which to flow.

A FMIC may have longer tubes, but the air will have to flow very quickly through those fins. I believe Corky Bell says that it is more beneficial to have many short fins than fewer long fins, making the the TMIC shape more efficient for its size. A member here reported measuring 35 degree lower temperatures in actual use with a newer TMIC.

However, it's the smaller pressure drop (compared to stock) of the larger TMIC that really makes it worth its weight. DaveNow has measured the pressure drop of the stock intercooler to be near 3psi, but the aftermarket TMIC's are closer to 0.3psi. What a huge difference! That's 2.7psi less that the turbo has to make, meaning that's 2.7psi worth of heat that the already-too-small turbo has to work to create. As you probably know, the more work the turbo has to do, the hotter the intake charge will be exiting the turbo. Even ignoring cooling capacity of the intercooler, the lower pressure drop alone should prove to be an impressive gain. It's no surprise that DaveNow also reported seeing 20whp gains.

As far as heat soak- yes, a TMIC isn't the most optimal location. It can be more of an interwarmer without proper precautions. Wrap the turbo, use a heat shield, and coat the downpipe. Engine temperatures can stay reasonable. You may notice part of the hood scoop blows air onto the turbo to force air to flow down off of it rather than up. User-reported surface temperatures of the TMIC's have been extremely encouraging, and I don't think heat soak is an issue.

THANK YOU.

ditto.

i will be tuning my cobb stg2 block w/fp red soon.i will be staying with my spearco top mount.for many reasons.

^^^ I haven't seen any concrete proof...
It makes me hesitant about pulling the trigger.

I really need a big TMIC for my 20g setup this summer, but I don't want to buy something that isn't going to do it's job as well as the other ic's.

Well I got my auto Dynasty TMIC on Thursday and installed it. Aside from my own custom made hose from turbo to Y pipe the install was actually very easy. The intercooler is just as good as I can tell as the TXS TMIC v1 that I bought 3 years ago. The end tanks are cast but they are polished. THere were a few little scratches on the end tanks but I don't care about that type of thing.

I have a pre/post intercooler temp gauge but I have to get at least a week under my belt of driving to see how it compares to the stock TMIC. I also have to finish up customizing the intercooler splitter to get a good seal AND provide air flow to the entire intercooler. I figure I should get that done in the next few days. I will keep everyone updated.

From a few quick little pulls I am making maybe 1-2 psi more at the same AVC-R settings which is what I was expecting. That is where people are getting their gains in HP IMHO ... less pressure drop = 1-2 psi more = 10-20hp gains. I bought it more for trying to get a larger detonation buffer (read longer before the intercooler will heat soak with my 50 trim - ala Green on a WOT run).

one thing i am noticing now with my 20g is my tmic is heatsoaking during my daily drives. i'll drive a little through town and get out, pop the hood and feel the turbo side and it is warm. and this is in about 80 degree weather.

i don't have a turbo wrap tho, using the stock modified heat shield. i'm really considering front mounting it. dont want to do meth...yet.

^^ Alcohol/water injection can fix that.

It would bring the temps down some, but yeah, it might still heatsoak.
