Ebay FTW!

Let me know how these work out for you guys.
Are you using them with upgraded turbo's or with the stock one?

Don't forget with the eBay TMIC you will need to replace the gaskets. The more complete kits come with two pipe gaskets but not the BOV gasket.

The BOV gasket is part #21896AA072 and I bought mine here:
http://subaruproparts.com/advanced_s...AA072&x=57&y=9

The other gaskets can be found at that store too. You CANNOT reuse the stock gaskets on your new TMIC, do not even try.

Since this particular thread seems to be the premier on this battle, would you mind posting the links to the other gaskets needed if someone does go this route. Might be nice to have it all posted.

Sticky? Or thread of interest?

Not much useful data to add here but when I got my Spearco I did notice a difference on the butt dyno a little bit. I did some data logging and the numbers were better (less knock correction, more timing advance, etc). I would also say that the turbo sounded a little different as well. Didn't sound like it was spooled up so high.

Stretch - lot of good points in your reply.

Some other data samples I will throw out there for the sake of conversation that I found suprising were from an EVO up here at high altitude as well. I bring up high altitude becuase in turbocharging it is a much different 'game' for us up here. To give you a little idea of what I am talking about my green style turbo will only hold about 20-21psi to redline up here (with a 11psi wastegate spring, AVC-R and Tial 38mm EWG plumbed back into an APS 3" catless). So at 20psi that would be like running 17psi at sea level. BUT the kicker is to make 20psi at redline I am running a PR of about 2.7 maybe even 2.8-3.0 when factor in intake vacuum losses and pressure drop through intercooler and TB. To run the same 'equivalent boost level' (17psi) at sea level you would only have to run the same turbo at a PR of 2.2 maybe 2.3-2.4 with the same losses factored in. So I am running a higher turbine speed and I am in a less efficient spot on the compressor map to boot. THEN to top it off ANY intercooler is less efficient up here since it's cooling medium, air, is about 15-20% less (5000-7000 ft asl).

The EVO owner is a very well versed mechanic and works at a performance shop. The impressive things I remember from talking to him about the EVO were the following:

-Wiht the stock turbo @ 24-25psi temps coming out the stock FMIC were about 50-70F over ambient!!
-He then adding water injection before the intercooler I believe and dropped temps down to 20-30F over ambient.

I just remember being so suprised that his temps coming out of the stock FMIC (which isn't a bad piece at ALL IMHO) were so high compared to what I was seeing with my stock TMIC and an upgraded turbo. Although my guess is he was seeing those temps from high speed runs or prolonged periods of boost (greater than 12-14 seconds - a 1/4 mile run).

I know I paid a little more than $1g for the injen fmic, I wonder if this $180 piece will out perform it. If it does that I will wish I still had that $1g and I would turn it into a 20g!!!!

Any word on this? Any difference between both?

Some good info here, I have learnt a bit.
But its true, the bigger the core the longer it takes to cool. More air is needed to cool it down.
Now they say that in the 06 the air dynamics of the car make the TMIC cool even faster, and even with the smaller scoop against the 04-05. The TMIC for 06 is the same as the 04-05, but i guess it all depends on how the air flows in order to cool the inter cooler.

I believe your statement about the 06 flowing more air through the intercooler is true. My tuner says they tune the 06s with the hood down and a fan pointed at the scoop. He says they see better results this way than with a fan sitting right on top of the intercooler like they do it with the 02-05s.

umm...that sounds pretty fishy too me. The 06's do have better aerodynamics on the hood, hence the smaller hoodscoop. But I doubt you'd have better results with the hood down than up.

i agree... makes more sense to have the hood open, if not just for the heat under the hood to escape better.
