All depends on the car though. I noticed REMARKABLY better fuel economy in my '99 Si with the AC on vs. windows down. However my '05 Taurus (company car, I did not choose it) must have the "extra super drag" AC compressor installed, because I can barely eek out 21 MPG with the AC vs 23+ with the windows down.

Yes, it depends on the car. Most of the times, if the car does not completely suck in the aerodynamics field, you will get better gas mileage with the windows up.

I average about 21.5 MPG, I travel about 65% highway 35% city, I stay off the boost unless provoked or I need to pass. The Sti is really not that bad compared to say-a Ford Expedition.....bet you can't give one of those away now..I can't really feel that sorry for those with SUV's...they knew what they were getting into when they bought it....gas will go back down in a few months though.

i get good gas mileage by shifting between 3000-35000 rpms and by at least keeping up with the traffic.i also have my tires at 40psi all the way around.i have had my tires that high since i bought the thing and no problems yet.oh and i drive in 6th as much as i can wether im in the city or highway, that really helps alot.id say i get about 23 mpg/city and close to 27 or 28mpg/highway.like others said, ditching unnecessary weight helps alot too,i clean out my trunk all the time and i dont really carry anything inside the car period.oh and i hardly ever use my AC.

I saw a gain of atleast 2 MPG when I went catless. Then again, the way I drive an extra 2 MPG means I went from horrible to bad. I also noticed another 1-2 mpg from the CF drive shaft as Mike already mentioned.

does keeping the tires at a higher pressure make them wear irregular or faster? if so it's not worth the benefit

As far as I know, no it does not (unless you go to the extreme).

My new 2006 got around 300miles on the first tank... I am still putting around keeping the RPMs below 4k.

Surprising, cause the break-in miles on my 05 were crap (17-18 mpg)...now things have evened out (4200 miles), I'm about 21-22 highway with some stop-and-go construction traffic, 26 if things are going smooth. I set the cruise about 5-8 over and occaisonaly stretch her legs a bit...but not often

All of you seem to be getting much better gas mileage than me. About 55% of my driving is highway, the rest is in town. I always run 93 octane, the car is stock. I average 17.5 mpg per tank. The only thing I can think of that could be the cause of the difference is that I have only had the car for a few weeks and I am not afraid of getting into the boost.

My milage was around 16-18 mpg during break-in, and for that matter, about the first 3k miles. I'm at 4500 miles now and things seemed to have smoothed out...got 25 mpg highway today, had the cruise set at 78 mph.

I bought my STi with 5500 miles on it. I must be pushing on the accelerator too much huh? Checked the aircleaner, it is in good shape, I run stock tire pressures, and don't have any unnecesary baggage in my car. Furstrating to have the worst mileage in the thread.
