Default egt install

in the instructions for my autometer egt gauge it says to install the probe 1-2 inches from the exhaust outlet.. does this mean put it in the downpipe or no? where did you guys tap yours into?

Header, on the driver's side rear-most cylinder. Can you do me a favor and scan your instructions and put them online? I'm halfway done with my install and not sure where I put them.

Default gauges

The autometer A/F gauge IS just a light show. It's not accurate enough for tuning (as it runs off of the rear O2 sensor which is solely responsible for monitoring cat converter efficiency). True wideband (ie 5 wire o2 sensor) monitoring systems are expensive but actually show the information you need.
As for EGT gauges, they are universal. You just need to tap the manifold for the probe. You could put one on a Yugo, if you so desired. Dump the autometer A/F gauge and save for a REAL a/f monitoring system.

I think you should also decide what you NEED an AFR gauge for. Unless you have street tuner or another user tuneable ECU, there really isn't much you can do with the gauge except know when you are running lean. I suppose if you were running lean you could either let off the throttle or put it to the floor to go into open loop. Neither will really do you much good for optimum performance, so in the end the AFR gauge just becomes something sitting in your dash that cost you a lot of money and can only tell you if something is not working correctly (which you will notice by the performance of your car anyway). The engine can go from rich to lean so quickly that visually monitoring a guage and interpreting good information can be very difficult. To use AFR as a tuning tool, you also have to relate the data to several other variables (rpm, load, injector duty cycle, egt, etc.) so being able to see one variable at a time with your eyes does not make tuning very easy.
Having a bung for a wideband O2, that your tuner can put his sensor into and log AFR's while tuning is a worthwhile investment IMO and is MUCh cheaper than buying the entire setup.

I stick with gauges that can be easily monitored by eye and also are on variables that I can have direct control over or can be acted upon to prevent damage to the engine. Things like oil pressure, coolant temp, EGT at just a few I can think of off the top of my head.

Thats my $0.02 on AFR gauges.
