Default Oil Cooling Problem...Need Help/Suggestions!

Alright ever since I did the full upgrade on my turbo i've been noticing that my oil temps have been unusually high. usually on a summer chicago day (70-90 degrees f) my oil temps just cruising have been between 215-225f no lower ever, and with the ac on 235-245. also when driving it agressively in the 240ish range...i called my tuner for suggestions and he suggested i change from the oil i was running(5w30 royal purple) to 10w40.

so, yesterday i did the oil change and suprisingly it made absolutely no difference...actually i think it made it a little worse...

anyways on to my questions...

1) what is causing my oil temp to run high in the first place

2)do you think that removing the plastic undertray will provide the oil pan more airflow esentially cooling it?

3) do you suggest i get an oil cooler?

4)i know that oil temps are releated to water temps due to the systems being tied together, thier is some black paint on my ac core, do you think that is changing the thermal dynamics of it therefore not allowing it too have airflow go through the radiator porperly and cool the system?

5) any suggestions to cure the problem?

also, just some additional info....i have a koyo racing radiator due to my tuner suggesting it, and before i had it the water temp would go from the 1/2 mark just cruising to the 3/4 mark with the a/c on, but now that the koyo is installed it will hold solid just above the 1/4 mark.

PLEASE HELP!!!!

MK

You have still yet to solve this problem?

Do you know for-sure if the gauge/thermostat is 100% accurate? I mean i've seen simple mechanical boost gauges reading way off.. It may be a possible gauge problem?

I say oil cooler. Its would be very usefull in you're situation. You can get them pretty cheap too.

For a proper oil cooler you'd need one with a separate thermostat as well so it doesn't over-cool the oil. Most oil coolers are expensive unless you just buy a cheap one that is just tubing, radiator and thats it.

Greddy i believe makes one

the rp is running hotter because 40 wieght doesnt dissipate heat as well as 30. if your using synthetic oil and the coolant temp is ok i woulnt worry about it.

The name brand ones are expensive. You can make a whole kit for about $270, depending on the size core you want.

I've been thinking about your problem for awhile now, and i'm wondering why you have much hotter oil temp than mine. Aside from the moroso oil pan that has heatsink, i have some thermotec double wrap on my stock exhaust manifold just because I hate the heatsoak. it could be a factor too since the manifold runs so close to the oil pan.

but i haven't read your journal that much yet to know if you have thermal wrapped your manifold/headers or not so i can't say it's the cause of your high oil temp.

i believe an exhaust leak near the oil pan can also make your oil very hot.

Your oil temps shouldn't be too high when you're just cruising. It could be heat from the exhaust manifold if it's not wrapped/shielded in some way. It can also be related to high coolant temps (the stock oil cooler is the thing right above the oil filter that coolant circulates through) but it sounds like your coolant temps are fine. I made myself an oil cooler since my oil temps were getting way hot at the track so you could do the same, costs a little over $300. As long as you use a t-stat it certainly can't hurt.

i have tomei headers that are not wraped or coated....do you think that the headers are giving off so much head it is esentailly cooking the oil in the pan? do you think that me removing the undertray will get some airflow down there to cool it?

1)If I had to make one guess, I would guess its your unwrapped, uncoated headers.

2)Absolutely not. The undertray is a necessary part of the cooling system.

3)It wouldn't hurt especially if you plan on actually tracking your car in the future.

4)The AC core has nothing to do with the coolant or oil system. The AC core is a heat exchanger for the refrigerant in the AC system. Regardless, getting paint on it isn't going to affect it.

5)Wrapping or coating your headers and up pipe would be a good place to start.

FWIW, I'm regularly seeing oil temps in the 210s also (tapped into the gallery plug nearest the IC). It is, after all, really hot out.

FWIW, I was thinking about your temps vs. mine today. I was going to ask you where your sending unit is located......but you already stated that.

Mine is at the "sandwhich" adapter on the oil filter housing. Mine very well could be after the oil has been "cooled" by the coolant/exchanger.

The hottest I have ever seen was 218*. That was running about 90-95mph in 100* heat with the A/C full blast.

I use mobil1 5w-30 or 10w-30 depending on the seasons around here.
