All you need to know is that the '05s were the best.

I don't know if any were really better than the others but several '07s seem to have huge engine failures so watch out for that.

isnt the 07 engine fine if you get it tuned right away?

Anyway, I'm biased towards an 05 cause thats what I own and love it....no trouble at all with the car so far at 25k on it.

Yeah, sorry. I meant the '07s were having problems FROM THE FACTORY. They also had different gearing than the 04-06 models.

The end result is going to be different with each car but if you want an idea you can check out my journal's power mod section. I didnt go crazy with anything. It just a basic Stage 2 setup that yielded me 312awhp and 337 awtq...next step for me would be supporting mods for a turbo and then a bigger turbo...maybe a 20g, not sure yet.

Its been said before but its worth repeating...05 FTW. Some people may come in here and say another year is better but they also know 05 is the best.

07 has issues from factory like people said, but a tune (see accessport...) would fix that problem right away... also, it was only effecting the early buid date 07s, so if u get a later build date, you shouldnt have to worry.
The gearing (2nd and 3rd i believe, but not 100% sure) are taller in the 07s, and the 07s got fender braces from the factory (so im told, havent checked to confirm)

I love my 07, i got rid of the factory map, and i never drove another STi so i cant physically feel the difference in gearing.... i was looking at an 05 to begin w/ before i decided i wanted a new car, so yeah...

Good luck

Average power mods i would say is a downpipe and catback exhaust w/ Cobb's Accessport for the stage 2 tune. Then you can take it further and get it tuned by an actual person, tailored to your vehicle, and you can include things like meth / alk injection, intakes, injectors, spark plugs, bigger intercoolers (front mount or top mount).... theres endless possibilities w/ these cars, as long as you get a tune

I like the 06's, not only because I own one, but the AWD bias is a bit different than the 04-05, there has to be some reason why they changed it in 06. I also like the 06 exterior better than the 04-05(I owned an 05 WRX before my STI). Its a bit more aerodynamic than the 04-05.

Engine wise, same. Tranny wise, really the same except for the AWD bias. Diffs, same. Looks, its up to you. 05-07 have much better wheel bearings than the 04 as well has having a much better(again IMO) interior. The suspension was changed in 05 slightly as well along with the 5x114 wheel stud spacing vs the 5x100 in the 04.

I would go for an 05 or 06.

05+

The 04s are considered the most "raw" of the STIs, but I think their 5x100 hubs are reason enough to look for an 05 or newer.

Personally, I think the 06s and 07s are the ones to look at. 07s require a little more TLC in the tuning department, but you get more for a Stage 2+. I'm also partial to the slightly taller gearing.

But the 06s don't have the tuning quirks of the 07s and the slightly lower gearing does have it's advantages.
