that happened because of the early timing issues on modded 07's. i think they figured it out the week after i busted the ringlands.

"that happened because of the early timing issues on modded 07's"

What exactly does that mean? What mods did you have? And in what order?

i was heavily modded with big injectors and an upgraded turbo. 390 whp. basically, the big problem was the lack of tuning info. there are 4 ignition maps and 2 have to be disabled or else they can over advance the timing and cause busted ringlands. any good tuner can tune the 07's now to be as reliable as any other year. mine was tuned a year ago, before the info was avaliable to properly tune them.

It is somewhat known now what the DA 'A' and 'B' maps do (info can be found on the romraider site). Knowing it, I still prefer to zero them out.

oil smoke in the exhaust under heavy boost, low vacuum, not hitting target boost, hard starting, etc.

i have a vacuum/boost gauge so i can see vacuum. i saw the oil smoke between shifts when racing it around. the smoke was dark, my windows are tinted so it was hard to tell what color, but it should dark with a bluish tint.

Anyone concerned about a busted ringland can turn their car on and take off their oil filler cap. Under most circumstances, oil will be splashing out of the oil filler. There will also be a noticable amount of exhaust coming out of the oil filler that will plume with the cycle of the motor.
Another way to tell is to drop the headers and look for oil in the headers.
And yet another way is to just do a compression leak down test.

Sorry for your loss there n2oiroc but it looks like you have it under control. I have a smoked ringland in my 04 STi but unfortunately I deployed to Iraq before I could drop in a new block. at least I'll have something to do when I get home
